Hello! I’m Diane Alberts (but I also write as Jen McLaughlin), and I am so happy to be here today! I have a new book out called STEALING HIS HEART with Entangled Publishing (Entangled Brazen), and it’s the second book in my Shillings Agency series. The first book was TEMPORARILY YOURS! I’m thrilled to be here talking about the second book in the series (which is loosely tied with FALLING FOR THE GROOMSMAN, which came out in June).

Since the central plot of the book is a security agent who has to blackmail his ex-partner—who is still a thief, unlike him—I thought it would be fun to list a bunch of fun reasons not to do exactly this.

They might have dirty, dirty things on you, too.

They wouldn’t hesitate to put these dirty, dirty things in the right (or wrong) hands.

You have a shared history…which means they have photos. More than likely? Embarrassing photos.

They will exploit these to their fullest extent. Whether it’s your secret love for pickled radish or your fear of clowns…they will use it.

And then they will post it on every social media outlet available.

And laugh.

So will everyone else.

Why Salem?
I’ll be the first to admit a book set during the Salem witch trials doesn’t exactly scream romance. For that matter, the setting doesn’t even whimper romance—at least not at first glance. I mean, there were hangings and rotting jail cells and constant fear—not just of the evil that supposedly lurked among the people of Salem, but of being accused of so-called affliction and being sent to die. This fear was tangible. It lived and breathed among these people as if it were one of their own, and I admit my initial draw to Salem had a whole lot to do with its dark history.

But then came the challenge.

This wasn’t just a terrible period that tends to get a lot of play on the History Channel each October. It was a time in which people (or the lucky ones who survived) lived. They loved, they lost, they feared, and they had stories. Looking back, it was a relatively brief, terrifying period, but for those who lived it, it was so much more. Not just death, but life. She raked his hair. Clutched desperately at his back. Found it was she who moved against him, for he had eased his grip in favor of taking fierce hold of her breasts. In the dark and through her clothes, he put his mouth over first one, then the other. Desire toppled her sensibilities until she was left arching her back, every part of her begging to be closer. Snowed into the empty department store overnight. Kate has just explained where her fear of the dark has come from, and waits for Ryder to say something derisive about it.

He didn’t say anything for the longest time, but his forehead furrowed as if he were thinking hard about what she’d said. And he didn’t look too pleased about the information.

She felt the tangle of nerves tie up in her stomach. He probably thought even less of her now than he had before. She should never have told him the truth. Why hadn’t she simply refused to answer the question? Why had she willfully exposed her most embarrassing secret to a virtual stranger? He’d accused her of being a princess, vain and selfish and superior, and he had even more ammunition now to support that theory.

But just as her anxiety reached breaking point, he slung an arm around her shoulders and gave her a quick squeeze.

“Okay, look,” he said, the tone a little stiff but not remotely contemptuous. “We should head up to the electrical department first for a couple of flashlights. So we’re all set if the generator goes again.” He led her toward the stairwell. “Then we need to find you some dry clothes.” He glanced down at her attire. “Unless of course you want to wear the lap-dancing elf outfit again. I certainly wouldn’t object.”

“I’m not putting that on again,” she said, so relieved at the change of topic she felt almost giddy. “I looked ridiculous.”

Giddy relief turned to giddy shock when his arm tightened and he murmured, “Katherine, you did not look ridiculous. You looked seriously hot.”

The blush shot up her neck and set fire to her ears.

“But if you’re dead-set against giving me any more cheap thrills,” he added, apparently oblivious to her embarrassment, “which I personally think is a little small of you, then I suggest we check out the lingerie department and find a compromise we can both live with as a fallback position.”

“Um…” She stammered, her wits having completely deserted her.

Was he flirting with her? And if he was, why was it making the giddy shock turn into a giddy thrill? “I’m not sure that’s appropriate…” She continued trying to find her indignation. Or at least a tiny iota of her usually very reliable common sense.

“Katherine, we’re stranded in the middle of a major weather event here. Forget appropriate. The only benefit to a situation like this is that appropriate no longer applies.”

Contemporary romance. I like to write modern, snappy stories about families.

What is your favorite place to write?
In my writing chair looking at the ocean

What is the best way to get over writer's block?
Go for a walk on the beach!

How do you celebrate a new contract?
Coffee and cake with my local writer friends.

Can you tell us about your current book?

We often go sailing in the Whitsunday Islands and spend a lot of time in the marina looking at luxury boats. My imagination fired one day as I saw a luxury white cruiser and the story was born.

Jake... big, strong and sexy!

If you could travel in a time machine, would you go back to the past or into the future?
Back to the past... I have a deep love for medieval history

Annie Seaton lives with her husband, and ‘Bob’ the dog and two white cats in a house next to the beach on the east coast of Australia.
