Blurb:
Two hearts are wrenched between love and duty in Sharon Cullen’s tale of a ruthless pirate and the Scottish lass who fills him with desire for something greater than plunder.

With her clan’s crops burned and their property confiscated, Mairi McFadden is desperate to free her brother from imprisonment so that he can take his rightful place as chief. Her only hope is the fierce English pirate Phin Lockwood, but the buccaneer laughs at her meager funds. His roving eyes, however, tell Mairi there’s something else he’ll take in exchange for her brother’s rescue. Though she burns with hatred for the English, she’ll do anything to save her clan.

The crown has made it clear that Phin has two choices: bring in a certain Scottish traitor or hang. And he’s not about to let a tiny, whiskey-eyed woman get in his way, even if she is pointing a gun at him. When Phin learns that Mairi’s brother is the very man he seeks, he’s more than willing to use the lass as bait. But as the moment of capture draws near, Phin is surprised by his feelings for the courageous beauty who has him considering risking his life—for someone besides himself.

Building The Perfect (Book) Cover
I did quite a bit of research before contracting out the design for the cover of Serendipity. I knew I definitely didn’t want to use a stock image that numerous other books had already used (hello – how do you distinguish between the five books currently out that used the exact same image?)  And since I have zero skills at any semblance of art or graphic design, coming up with my own cover wasn’t even on the radar.  I know that new authors are on a limited budget but some of the covers I had seen either looked like someone’s ten-year-old child had designed it on Photoshop, or that they had persuaded their brother or boyfriend to pose for a not-always-flattering shirtless photo.  I knew that first impressions meant a lot when it came to marketing a book by a brand new author, so having a professionally designed, original cover was just as important to me as the content inside the cover.
I wound up using the services of Damon at Damonza Book Cover Designs and I have never regretted the decision.  He was prompt, professional and very helpful.  He suggests on his website keeping covers simple and straightforward, and more or less discourages using character images.  I thought this made perfect sense, given the success of such series as Fifty Shades, Crossfire, and Twilight to name a few, all of which have a very simple, basic image on the cover and no attempt to create images of the characters.  Not to mention the fact that I had very specific images of real life people/celebrities in mind when I created the characters in Serendipity, and getting permission to replicate their images would have either been cost-prohibitive at best or impossible at worst.
So many thanks to Damon for his great advice, and I would encourage more authors to follow suit.  Having a professional, original book cover is definitely an investment but if it’s in your budget I would absolutely recommend it.   If it’s not in your budget, which is completely understandable, then you should at least try to use a different stock image than one that’s already been used on half a dozen books.  I would steer away from using character images, especially if they don’t bear much resemblance to the descriptions of your hero and heroine (i.e. a blonde female on the book cover when inside she’s described as having red hair).  Keep the image simple and neat, but professional at the same time.  Remember that the book cover creates that very important first impression.  I know I’ve automatically dismissed some books because the cover looked sort of shoddy and unprofessional, and the thought can’t help but cross your mind that the writing might be of the same poor quality.

Was meeting again an unfortunate twist of fate? Or was it just serendipity?
Julia McKinnon was convinced she’d found the one – the man of her dreams, the most seductive, experienced lover she’d ever known – and the night they’d spent together in New York was the stuff erotic fantasies were spun from. But with the dawn of a new day came only heartache and betrayal, and her dreams were snuffed out like so much fairy dust.

Nathan Atwood felt like the lowest sort of life form after seducing the incredibly beautiful girl he met in New York, only to break her tender heart with the confession that he was already involved with someone else.  Leaving Julia was the hardest thing he’d ever done, and the memory of their passionate night together haunted his dreams for months afterwards.

Now fate has brought them together again, and they are forced to work alongside each other. Will Julia be able to put aside the feelings she still has for her handsome boss and forge a new life for herself in San Francisco? And how long will Nathan be able to resist the gorgeous woman he’s never really stopped thinking about or wanting?

Xpresso Presents Fifty First Times Anthology Book Blitz & Giveaway!!

Welcome to my stop on the Fifty First Times Anthology Book Blitz & Giveaway!

Here's about my first time I attended the Romantic Times Convention. It was Pittsburgh, PA in 2008 and I was so excited. I was so looking forward to meeting my favorite authors and to experience the convention. I remember squealing out loud when I saw Ann Jacobs, she's one of my favorite authors. There were a lot of people on the elevator and I was busy reading everyone's badge to see who they were. Every time I recognized an author I read, I gave a little squeee and introduced myself. I met so many wonderful people and had the best time. The Mr. Romance contest was awesome, all those hot hard shirtless male bodies strutting around on stage is enough to make anyone need a cold shower. I really enjoyed all the workshops and the night parties. I think I went around the entire convention with my mouth hanging open in awe of everything I saw. I met quite a few cover models and I swear it was enough to make me swoon. I even attended the Cover Model dinner. It was unlike anything else I've experienced.

“Fifty First Times” is a collection of fictional short stories from variety of published Young Adult, New Adult, and Adult Romance authors aimed at a New Adult audience. Each story magnifies a moment in two characters’ lives that shows the reader their decision to take physical intimacy to a new level, the events leading up to this moment and in some cases, the events that follow.

QUOTES
"I twist the ring around my left finger. It’s foreign to my body, but in the same way a new pet is foreign to a person’s home. It represents work and responsibility, but somehow you know that it will eventually become a part of you. Jack’s already a part of me. It’s just the ring that’s new." –DAYLIGHT by Julie Cross

The friendzone wasn’t such a bad place to be. I saw how Allen treated the people he slept with. They were as disposable as red Solo cups. “I’m an equal opportunity lover,” he once told me, “but you can call me a slut.”—BUNGA BUNGA by Andrew Shaffer

But when she's offered a job with Sex Goddess, Inc., she must complete the company's wildly popular Sex Goddess 101 program. Reese’s sexy, off-limits best friend Ben Hawk helps her “fake” her way through lingerie shopping, phone sex, and seduction lessons. The passion that flares between them might be hotter than their friendship can withstand. And the idea that he only wants the “new” her? That's definitely more than her heart can stand.

Excerpt:
With a forced smile, Reese withdrew an envelope from her purse and handed it to Ben. “Apparently, Sex Goddess equals dirty.”

“Is this your next step?” He stifled a grin. “Please tell me she’s making you burn your bras.” He signaled to the door with his thumb. “I think I have some lighter fluid at the house.”

“What? Of course she’s not.” She scowled. “I hope not.”

Ben’s eyes dropped south for a second. “You know, bras are a sign of repression. Liberate the breasts and liberate the woman.”

She rolled her eyes. “Stop being a dork and read the letter.”

Ben frowned. “You’re taking this program more seriously than I thought you would.”

“No, I’ve just gotten really good at faking it.”

“The new outfit doesn’t look fake. Or the makeup.”

Balls clacked at the pool table behind them and the Bears game played on the big screen.

“So, I like looking sexy. Women like to be wanted, Ben. It comes standard with the estrogen.”

“And men didn’t want you before you started taking Halie’s Holy Steps?”

“Most of which I’m faking,” she reminded him. She waved a hand dismissively. “Just read it.”

“The phone sex didn’t seem fake,” he said softly. Neither had her hand in his or the way she’d squeezed his hand when Sydney played her solo.

A red tinge crept up her cheeks. Satisfied, Ben turned to the letter.

Say goodbye to your panties. For the next week, you’ll be going commando, forcing your mind to acknowledge the parts of your body too often left as an afterthought.

He grunted. “No wonder my guys want their wives to sign up.”

“Spoken like a true male. Foregoing underwear isn’t sexy, it’s unsanitary.”

He shook his head. “It’s sexy.”

“What if I’m doing yard work?”

“Sexy.”

She crossed her arms and her cheeks flushed. “Or I’m working out?”

“Still sexy.”

Reese leaned forward. “Or I want to wear a skirt?”

Ben narrowed his eyes. “Now you’re just tormenting me.”

She shook her head. “I don’t need to go commando to acknowledge my female parts.”

Leaning back in his chair, Ben folded his arms across his chest and studied her. Why was she taking this program so seriously? The kiss? The phone sex? He wasn’t complaining, but couldn’t she have just as easily fabricated a story for Halie?

They were the questions that were starting to niggle at him. Despite what Reese said, this was about more than a job.

He handed back the letter and only let himself ask one question. “So, when do the panties come off?”

Author Wednesday-Dena Garson & Giveaway!!!!

© Astine | Dreamstime Stock Photos & Stock Free Images

Welcome to Author Wednesday! Today my guest is Dena Garson. She's interviewing Danet from her book Mystic's Touch. There's also a great giveaway. So make sure to enter the rafflecopter!!!!

Thanks for stopping by today Dena and Danet! Shall we get on with the interview???

Thanks to Julianne for letting me drop in on Author Wednesday. My new book, Mystic’s Touch just came out on the 13th and I’ve been a busy little bee!

New books are exciting. But when it means introducing characters you absolutely fell in love with, it’s even more special. In an effort to let you get to know my heroine, Danet, better I posed a few interview questions to her. First, to give you some background, here’s a glimpse into Mystic’s Touch:

When Prince Ceros returns home to take his place on the throne, he falls prey to a mysterious malady that leaves him unable to speak or move, though his thoughts and awareness remain intact. Danet, a talented healer, realizes the prince is alert inside his body. The two are able to share thoughts telepathically. Unfortunately her connection with Ceros may bring unwanted attention to her abilities and result in her banishment from the city.

Their unique bond grows as Danet races to find a remedy for the prince’s condition. Desire turns to love, which makes Danet fear for their future when he awakens. They seek out the villain attempting to take the throne and endeavor to find a way to stay together.

Inside Scoop: Ceros’ secret shifter status adds complication and intrigue to their budding romance.

Check out the book trailer for Mystic’s Touch: http://youtu.be/4rcPumYSe5w

Now, let’s hear from Danet:

What is your favorite food?
Our housekeeper Ryana makes the best sweet bread in the kingdom. If I’m feeling stressed or down about something, she always makes fresh batch for me. Ryana is too good to me!

Why are you considered to be a healer instead of a physician?
I was trained as a physician and even studied with one of my father’s closest friends who is considered one the kingdom’s top physicians. Unfortunately, it is virtually unheard of for a woman to complete the training and become a physician. It makes some of our older physicians and members of the Council more comfortable to think of me simply as a healer. I am lucky that I am able to work in my father’s clinic with autonomy. It allows me to treat my patients without having to ask for confirmation of my diagnosis from someone else just because they are male.

What did you think when you realized you could hear Prince Ceros’ thoughts?
At first I didn’t realize what I was hearing was only in my head. When I did, I was startled, scared and excited because I knew what it probably meant. But when I found out it was Ceros – the Prince – I was terrified. The only thing that kept me from running home and never returning was hearing his frustration at not being able to communicate with anyone else.

What other “gifts” do you have?
I used to get glimpses of the future, but I haven’t done that in a very long time. I can still manifest a shield to protect myself and maybe one or two others from danger. And I have an uncanny knack for healing people. It’s hard to say how much of that is due to my education and continued learning and how much of an inherent “gift.” There are probably more that I don’t know of yet. I have a lot to learn about my heritage.

What attracted you to Ceros?
He is a very good looking man. *grins* But I think it was his passion. And, no, I don’t just mean in bed. It’s how far he’s willing to go to protect his family and his kingdom.

Laura Kay's Hard As You Can Blog Launch Party & Giveaway!!

It’s release day! And I’m so excited to share Hard As You Can, the second book in the Hard Ink series, with all of you here today! Hard As You Can follows the surviving members of a disgraced Army Special Forces team as they fight to regain their stolen honor, and finds their investigation crossing paths with a waitress willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect her younger sister. For Shane McCallan, saving Crystal Dean is a mission he refuses to turn down.

Today, I’ve got a super sexy scene to share with you, one that was a total surprise to me as I was writing it! I hope you enjoy this peek at the first time Shane and Crystal find themselves alone with each other:

“Do you like to dance, Crystal?” Shane asked in a low voice.

“Uh, what? Why?”

His smile was crooked, playful. “ ’Cause dancing’s something people do when they’re getting to know each other.”

“Really?” Maybe where he was from. Then again, she worked in a strip club. Dancing was something people did to make money. So, okay, maybe her view of dancing was a bit jaded.

“Absolutely. Ask anybody.” The song faded away, followed by the announcement of a Southern rock station’s call sign. A new song started, and Shane turned to her with a smile. “Dance with me.”

Crystal peered up at him without the slightest idea how to respond. Because her body was saying hell, yes!, while her brain was screaming bad idea, really, really bad idea.

He stepped closer, arms raised, expression full of all kinds of invitation.

The next thing she knew, her right hand was in his and her left had slipped around his neck. Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod, ran over and over in her mind. What am I doing? But then he tucked her hand against his chest and tugged her against him with the hand that settled at her lower back. And the closeness stole her breath.

He moved them to the beat of the song, a slow, sexy, bluesy number she didn’t know but would never forget. Some songs carried memories like the images were imprinted upon the very lyrics themselves, and she had no doubt this would be one of them.

All of a sudden, the air in the room felt ten degrees warmer. As they swayed to the beat, Shane’s body pressed against hers from thighs to chest. With every step and move and turn, Crystal’s breasts rubbed against the hard plane of his chest. Strong hands held and guided her body, making her want to feel them explore her everywhere. Arousal rose like a waking dragon inside her. Cautious. Curious. Dangerous.

This was wrong and stupid on so many levels. But, scary as it was, it felt so freaking good that she couldn’t force herself to pull away. One song. It’s just a dance. Just a dance just a dance just a dance.

And, holy crap, she wasn’t the only one aroused.

Against her belly, Shane hardened.

Crystal sucked in a breath, and he pressed his lips close to her ear. “We’re just dancing here. That’s all. I promise,” he said. But the adrenaline was already in her blood, setting her to a trembling she couldn’t control. Part curious interest and part instinctive fear. “Sshh,” he almost cooed. “Just dancing.”

The echo of her own thoughts from a moment before allowed her to draw a breath that almost calmed. They turned and swayed to the music, moving closer, pressing tighter, Shane’s lips so close to her face that she could feel his breath shudder across her cheekbone.

He was a fire she had no business playing with. She knew that even as she leaned her face against his . . . and got exactly what she’d hoped for.

He kissed her.

Just a brush of his lips against her cheek, but a kiss all the same.

And as much as it made her head spin, it was the little catch of breath in the back of his throat that sent a jolt of electricity down her spine to settle low in her belly. Light as a feather, he caressed her cheek, her temple, her ear with his lips. With him, always such gentleness, so different from almost every other sexual experience she’d ever had. It made her feel safe to allow this to continue.

Between them, his erection was firm, long, totally unyielding.

She shivered, caught between interest and fear, desire a river moving faster and faster inside her. The whole experience was a revelation—that her body had the capacity to respond this way, that a person existed who could pull these reactions from her.

For a moment, she gave herself over to the dizzying sensations. In her mind’s eye, she saw them undressing, fumbling their way back the hall, falling naked and wanting on the bed. What would it be like, just once, to take something that she wanted without worrying about anyone else, without being afraid? Just one wild, secret night, all for her? What would Shane be like?

So that’s Shane and Crystal for you! Did you have a favorite line? Thanks for reading!
~Laura

Q&A WITH LAURA KAYE

HARD AS YOU CAN is your second book in the “Hard Ink” series (after USA Today bestseller, HARD AS IT GETS). What can readers look forward to?

Readers can look forward to tons of sexy alpha male goodness, awesome bromance between the Hard Ink men, more antics from the Hard Ink puppy, and another great love story between Shane and Crystal. But readers should also be ready for a book that is darker, more intense, and more emotional. This book pushed me to emotional places that were tough as a writer, and might be tough for readers, too. But I think that just makes the payoff at the end so much sweeter!

Describe Shane and Crystal. What are their best traits? What are their weaknesses?

Shane and Crystal are such an amazing couple to me. They’re each exactly what the other needs. Shane’s best traits are his protectiveness, his fundamental kindness, and his soul-deep loyalty (his southern accent and humor are also right up there!). His biggest weakness for sure is a tragedy from the past for which he blames himself—and it’s something that continues to motivate him in Hard As You Can. Crystal’s best traits are her courage, protectiveness, and selflessness—she’s willing to do anything to keep her younger sister safe. Her biggest weakness is also that selflessness, because the sacrifices she’s required to make are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

If you could describe your book in a 140 character tweet, what would it be?

When a woman in trouble assists an ex-soldier's covert mission to regain his team's stolen honor, he finds a new mission to save her, too

What are you most excited about with this second book release?

I’m really excited to take readers deeper into these awesome characters and into the mystery behind the Hard Ink team’s ambush and discharge!

What books are you reading right now?

I’m almost done with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander (yes, I’m very late to the party but OMG JAMIE FRASER!!!). And I’ve recently devoured and loved Juliana Stone’s Offsides and Shelly Thacker’s time-travel historical romance, Forever His.

What can fans of your “Hard Ink” series look forward to next?

There will be two more Hard Ink books in 2014!

Hard to Hold on To – August 2014
Hard to Come By – November 2014

Laura will also be hosting a Facebook party for HARD AS YOU CAN on 2/25 from 12-9pm EST if you want to help spread the word, that’d be great: https://www.facebook.com/events/416084181828110
