Chapter One

“I don’t believe you. My sister was not charging boys to kiss her.” Meg McKenzie said, standing in the field of her small east Texas family farm. Her sister’s school teacher stood in front of her, arms folded, the school marms temper barely held in check.

At nineteen, Meg felt too young to be the responsible parent of a fifteen year-old.  And Ruby was definitely more than one person could handle.

“I’m sorry, Meg. I know you’ve had to raise this child without much help from your father, but I can’t have her coming back to my class. She’s a distraction in the classroom,” the young woman told Meg, her parasol shielding her from the sun.

They stood out in the pasture where Meg had been hoeing the spring garden, preparing it for spring planting. Her working pants were coated with mud, she smelled of manure and her hands were calloused and rough from time spent working the land.

Meg dreamed of being a woman who had few responsibilities and wasn’t accountable for the care of the farm and her two sisters.  She didn’t want to be a parent. She longed to wear skirts, go to dances and flirt with young men. She wanted to feel young, not like her life was half over, before it had even begun.

And Ruby seemed to stay in trouble.  “My sister may not have had a mother to raise her properly, but she’s been taught that girls don’t chase boys.”

Staring at the school marms clothes, Meg recognized her poke bonnet and how she wore a bustle beneath her skirt. From the last catalogue her Papa had brought home, it was the latest fashion.

“She wasn’t chasing them, Meg. She was charging them a nickel a piece to kiss her,” Miss Andrews said, her parasol held tightly in her gloved hands. The old maid had driven out here in her buggy, her fourth visit this school year.

Meg couldn’t help herself, she laughed. Not even Ruby would be foolish enough to do something so naughty. “I don’t believe you.”

Miss Andrews placed her hands on her hips and almost snarled at Meg. “I would never have found out about it, if the line hadn’t gone clear around the building. I caught her in the act of kissing Jimmy Brown.”

“She is magnetic to me. Every emotion she feels pulls me that much closer to her charm and energy. For reasons unbeknownst to me, I want her to know what she means to me.” ~Jake Evans

For Jake Evans, life was as it should be. No responsibilities. He was the master at embracing his reckless lifestyle whenever it presented itself. Surviving on his ability to expertly hustle, fight and womanize, Jake could do it all; lived it all.

Raised in a rundown city, filled with crime and drugs, he had survived the death of an abusive mother and a life with an absent father while only having his brothers to depend on. His lifestyle became fast and Jake had lived it the only way he knew how, until the day he met Delilah.

Delilah St. James was the epitome of flawless. Brought up in an affluent southern household, Delilah’s life had been planned from the moment she was born. She was raised to be the perfect socialite and daughter, and groomed to be the ideal wife. When a school internship moved her to Sulfur Heights for the summer, Delilah collided with the bitter reality of life outside her comfortable gated community when Jake Evans upset her perfect world.

Over the next two years, Jake and Delilah became best friends, embracing a friendship neither one was prepared to have, although they soon found it to be a relationship that neither one of them were willing to sacrifice.

A tragic turn of events brings Jake and Delilah together once again. Only this time, the feelings are different. Lines within their friendship are blurred. Everything they vowed never to do, becomes the very thing they cannot deny. Will Jake and Delilah’s relationship withstand the changes surrounding them? Or will the emotions sever the two year friendship they’d fought so hard to keep?

“As hard as this is for me to admit, you were right.”

“Right about what?” she whispers back.

With reasons unbeknownst to me, I want her to know what she means to me.

“You really are my best friend.” My voice is still quiet. So quiet, I wonder if I said it aloud at all. That’s until she replies.

Xpresso Presents- Emma Hart's Late Call Book Blitz & Giveaway!!

Welcome to For Whom The Books Toll. Thank you for stopping by my stop on Emma Hart's Late Call Book Blitz & Giveaway presented by Xpresso Book Tours.

Where do you draw your ideas for characters from? Are they ever based on real people?
The characters really form in my mind on their own – it’s that easy and that hard to create them! I never base them on real people, especially not anyone I know, but I tend to take certain phrases/quirks/likes from people and apply those. You may have noticed my female MCs are all kind of sarcastic and snarky, and that would be a bit of my own personality creeping in. ;)

What gave you the inspiration to write your first book?
I’d been downloading endless free books of iBooks before I moved to Kindle, and I started to realize they were all self-published. Around the time I was seriously considering starting to write myself, Mr. H turned around and said, “Why don’t you write your own book instead of bloody reading all the time?” And the rest is history.

Have you ever used a moment of your own life in a book? If so which book?
Not a moment, exactly, but THE RIGHT MOVES is loosely based on my own past and my struggles with depression.

How do you think up ideas for your books?
They come to me randomly. The GAME series started off because I dreamed the first few chapters of THE LOVE GAME and had to know how it ended. NEVER FORGET was inspired by the song Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. And LATE CALL was one of those random ideas that came from nowhere – it was actually sitting on my laptop for a year before it morphed into anything solid enough to become a story.

How do you deal with deadlines and fan expectations?
I thrive off of deadlines. If I don’t have them, I tend to procrastinate to the nth degree and do sweet FA. They’re a must for me, so I deal with them fairly easily.
Fan expectations are a funny thing-I never really know what they’re expecting. Not because I don’t pay attention, I do, but because I don’t let myself dwell on it. I’ve had several mini freak outs over Final Call (the sequel to LATE CALL) because I don’t know if it will live up to the first book, but there’s nothing I can do about them. I can only write my best, so that’s exactly what I do!

What’s the book you’d take with you to a desert island?
*grins* My electronic one, of course. My Kindle.

Who is your favorite author and what are you currently reading?
I have several favorite authors, so I’m not going to answer that in case they read this and I forgot them, ha. I’m not currently reading anything, but my next reads will be an early copy of Make It Count by Megan Erickson, and a beta reads for Elizabeth Otto and Delancey Stewart.

Do you prefer paperback or ebook?
Despite my choice to take my Kindle to a desert island, I’m a paperback girl. I love the smell of proper books.

Would you like to see one of your books made into a movie? If so, which one?
I think every author dreams of seeing their books on the big screen, so yes. If the opportunity ever arose, I’d love to see one of my books as a movie! And I think at this point I’d have to say LATE CALL.

Title: Late Call
Author: Emma Hart
Series: Call #1
Publication date: May 1st 2014
Genres: Adult, Erotica, Romance
Goodreads

Blurb:
She’s a high class call girl. He’s taking over his father’s business.

Seven years ago, they fell in love in Paris.

They walked away at the end of the summer, never imagining they’d meet again.

Now he’s her client.

We fell in love the way you jump from a cliff. Hard and fast with a reckless sense of abandon. The six weeks we spent together changed my life, but at seventeen, I was naive. I was a dreamer. A believer.

Now I’m twenty-four and cynical. I don’t believe in love. There’s no place for such emotions as a high class escort. The only things I’m allowed to feel are physical – and that’s why it’s so damn hard when the client of a last minute job turns out to be the man I left in France seven years ago. When he buys me for six weeks at triple my rate, my agent makes it clear I have no choice but to take the job despite our previous relationship. And my heart makes it very clear I have to stay firmly on top of the cliff this time.

Because for six weeks, I once again belong to Aaron Stone.

Excerpt:

“Don’t think I didn’t notice what you did back there,” he says in a low voice.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I give him my best innocent eyes.

His lips quirk into that smirk, and he steps forward when the barman disappears again. He rests his hand on my waist, his fingers flexing against the lace of my dress, and drops his eyes to mine.

“No, you have no idea of the effect you have on men simply by walking past them.”

“Not at all.” I run my fingers up his stomach, ignoring the feeling of solid muscle there, and tweak his bow tie. “It’s not my job to know the effect I have on them, rather, merely to affect them.”

“Well let me say you do it…” He bends his head toward mine. “…Spectacularly.”

“Thank you.” I pull on the tie harder and it unravels, hanging loosely around his neck, and I undo the top button of his shirt.

“What are you doing?”

I lean up and rest my mouth by his ear. “Giving people something to talk about. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to be doing?” My thigh brushes against his as I cross my legs.

“It’s absolutely what you should be doing.” Aaron says his words into my hair, and I turn my face into his.

“Then you should stop questioning me and allow me to do it.”

His hand flattens against my back, drawing us closer. “You play a dangerous game, Dayton.”

“It’s only dangerous if you don’t trust the person standing in front of you – if you don’t know their breaking point.”

“What makes you think you know mine?”

I smile against his cheek. “Have you forgotten? I know your breaking point and your tipping point, and I know exactly how to get you there.”

“It’s been seven years, as you keep reminding me. What if it’s changed?”

“I’m very good at adapting.” I pull back so a whisper of air hovers between our lips. “But it hasn’t changed a bit.”

“She think she’s so smart.”

Another smile tugs at my lips, and I whisper, “She knows if she drops her hand and brushes it against your groin, you’ll be hard and ready to take her in the first possible place.”

“Is that right?”

“Mhmm. A wall is the likely choice…” I rest my fingers against his belt, and he tenses. “Looks like she’s as smart as she thinks she is if you’re tense at my fingers sitting here… nowhere near the erection you’re failing to hide.”

He chuckles low, a raspy tone to it. “Your game is very, very dangerous, Miss Black.”

“And you get to play it for a whole six weeks. Aren’t you lucky?”

He curls his fingers around mine at his belt. “The only luck here will be if we leave Vegas without me fucking you against every wall of our suite.”

2Bibliophiles Presents-The Sin Circus Anthology Release Day Party & Giveaway!!

Everyone remembers their first trip to the circus--the home of fantasy and dreams. Where the idea that anything is possible meets a creative reality of alluring tricks and amazing acts of defiance. The big top is known for inspiring lust, awe, and happy memories, and now you'll see it like never before.

Some of today's hottest romance authors combine the decadent memories of the center ring with all the flavors in erotic fiction in The Sin Circus. Whether it's with a dominating Ringmaster, a lion tamer's bratty kittens, or a dark Harlequin King, this show is sure to shock the audience with it's dazzling dares and tantalizing tales.

Playing the Ringmaster

The Sin Circus began with a request to write a contemporary erotic short story that I just had to put a bit of a twist on. Even though the setting is the circus, I still feel like every story involved is contemporary and totally hot!
Originally, I’d planned on just submitting to a press and letting them handle the brunt of publishing, but after talking to one of my fave authors, Jennifer James, and getting her involved in my story, I knew we could make this thing a creature of heat, rather than a lonely little short.
So…
I contacted a group of highly efficient authors to get down and dirty with me. I was so excited to see so many get behind this concept. It helped that I asked them to write really naughty circus fantasies. Don’t you think?
I’m so proud of what we all accomplished in just a little over a month. Seriously, these authors are extremely talented, driven, and know their way around the big top. In more ways than one.
Whether urging a few of them to dirty it up a little, or pulling back on the reins for a couple of the old pros that wanted to take us beyond the happy ending—I had a blast leading these brilliant minds toward a satisfying completion I think we’ll all enjoy.
Being the Ringmaster is hard, demanding work, but it’s so worth it to see this project finished and being received with so many greedy readers. I hope you enjoy our Sin Circus.
Best wishes, Rachel Firasek (the Ringmaster of Sin Circus)

Excerpt:

Did you have sex with him?” Ethan asked, catching me off guard.
He had never asked me details about my past boyfriends.  He’d known I was almost a virgin, had known I needed him to go slow.  But he had never asked who the one guy was and I had appreciated that.
That he just asked now, so boldly, in the hallway, unnerved me.  “What?”  I knew I should tell the truth.  But I was afraid.  Afraid that Ethan would see what Heath had meant to me.  So before I could think about the consequences, I lied.  “No.  Of course not.”
He knew I was lying.  I could see it in his eyes.  But he didn’t call me out on it.
Instead, that night when we got back to his apartment a few streets from the fraternity house, Ethan fucked me.  He’d never done that.  Not the way he did that night.  He had always been tender, thoughtful, gentle with me, pausing to ask if I was okay, spending the majority of his time on pleasing me.  Coaxing me open and wet with kisses, hand strokes, his tongue between my thighs, before he entered me.  He’d never been rough.
But as soon as we got in the apartment, he pushed me against the wall and kissed me hard, hand yanking up the skirt of my dress.  His fingers were frantic stroking over me, in me, his tongue plunging deep into my mouth.  I wanted to tell him to slow it down, let me catch up, but I couldn’t because I knew why he was doing it.  He was staking a claim, putting his stamp on me.  Reminding himself that he had me, and Heath didn’t.
I couldn’t deny him that, not when I knew what he must have seen on my face, not when the very night Ethan had asked me to marry him, I had been distracted and emotional over someone he had never even heard me talk about.  If our roles had been reversed, I would need reassurance too, if some random chick showed up out of nowhere, and I wanted to give him that.
So when he pulled the zipper down my back and shoved my dress to the floor, I let him.  I let him peel off my bra and suck my nipples with uncharacteristic roughness, surprised that my body did respond.  It was different, yet I liked it.  It was the distraction I needed and I gripped Ethan’s head, my own falling back as I moaned.  I loved Ethan.  His ring was on my hand, invisible in the dark, but foreign on my finger, so that I was very aware of it.
His touch trailed down my stomach and bending down, he pulled my panties to the side so he could shatter me with his tongue.  I held onto his shoulders and gave him the moans he wanted, my verbal commitment in oral sex form.  “Yes, Ethan, yes.”
As soon as I came, he stood up, unzipping his pants and lifting his erection out.  I fought for breath as he lightly smacked my thigh.  “Wrap your leg around me,” he said urgently.
I obeyed and then my back hit the wall hard as he pushed into me.  All the air left my lungs before I sucked in another breath, holding onto his shoulders for balance.
“I love you,” he said, panting, his forehead pressing against mine.
But all I could think was that for the first time ever he hadn’t used a condom.
And his head was hard, his air stealing mine.  I felt pressed, smothered.  Turning my head to steal a fresh breath I whispered, “I love you, too.”  Then after another thrust, felt compelled to remind him, “You have to pull out.  Ethan.  Please.”
Because he was Ethan, he did.  He gave a groan of frustration but he pulled back, raking his hands through his hair.  “Oh, my God, you felt so good.  God.  Caitlyn.  Are you sure I can’t…”
The thought of getting pregnant had me shaking my head rapidly.  “I’m sorry… no, we can’t…”
“Shit.  I know.  I know.”  He helped me step out of the circle of my dress on the floor and he took me to the bed, his shoulders rising and falling rapidly with the urgency of his breathing.  “I’m sorry.”
Once in his room, he was careful Ethan again, undressing himself and worshipfully taking off my bra and panties.
He was quieter, more subdued, in control again.
When he pulled me onto his chest afterwards, for the first time ever I felt there was a gap between us.
And I was afraid I knew exactly who had created it.

After the best first date ever, Lee thought Laura was funny, intelligent, and impulsive; a whirlwind of bright laughter and happiness. Laura loved Lee's sweet smile and the way he expertly filled in every awkward pause. He held her hand and then pulled her in for the most perfect kiss she’s had in years. What could possibly be wrong? Just the 7000 miles that separates them the next day.

Even though Lee has gone home to Seoul, Laura can't stop thinking about him. What starts as an innocent text thanking him for their dinner date becomes something much more: someone either of them can't live without. But Laura's got a live-in mother going through a midlife crisis, and Lee's stressful traveling schedule means they'll be apart for some time. Life, family, and a complicated past also get in the way, and they're both going to need actual face time to figure it out.

Excerpt:
I place my iPhone back on the bed stand, open the drawer and pull out a stack of photographs I keep, a few spanning the time I spent building houses in New Orleans after Katrina. Looking at a photo of me standing on the porch of a finished house, my stomach is an empty cavern much like when I lived there, but I hand it to Lee anyway so he can see. My hair was cropped short, almost entirely gone, the dreads I accumulated in Asia hacked off by my enraged father before he pushed me out the door. I’m wearing an oversized t-shirt, but it doesn’t disguise how bare bones I was, my elbows sharp points and legs matchsticks holding me up. I hope I’m never that skinny again.

“Is this you? Laura, I don’t believe it.”

“It is. From my time in New Orleans building houses. I was really good at carpentry. I can probably still frame a door.”

“Look at your hair. And you were soooo skinny.” Lee holds the photo close to his face and examines the old me, his eyes taking in every detail, and a frown forming across his lips. What does he see? “You look starving, Laura.”

“Yeah.”

I set that one aside so I don’t cry and laugh at several more in the pile: me and friends I’ve forgotten the names of, New Orleans in spring, and a self-portrait in a mirror with my steadily growing hair clipped back and Paul, my brief boyfriend, sitting on the couch behind me. This girl in these pictures is just as much me as the person I am today. We’re so different but so similar. I’m just as outgoing, as trusting, as adventurous as this girl was, but I’ve grown, and I’m happier now. I’ve learned good lessons that continue to guide me today, and therapy for years made me stronger than I’ve ever been.

“All of the time I spent in New Orleans, and this is what I brought back with me. Bad memories.”

S. J. Pajonas loves all things Asian and has been in love with Japan and the East for as long as she can remember. Writing about Asia and Japan came naturally after studying the culture and language for over fifteen years. She studied film and screenwriting first and eventually segued into fiction once she was no longer working a full-time job.

Face Time is the first novel in the Love in the Digital Age series, and Pajonas’s first foray into Korean culture and families. Along with Removed and Released in the Nogiku Series, she continues to take the cultures of Asia and weave them into stories that appeal to people from around the world. Her writing is described as unique and unpredictable. Expect the unexpected.

Stephanie lives with her husband and two children just outside of New York City. She loves reading, writing, film, J- and K-dramas, knitting, and astrology. Her favorite author is Haruki Murakami and favorite book is The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.
