Hello and Happy Release Day to Victoria Vane! The Sheik Retold is out today so run, don't walk to your favorite retailer and grab your copy!!

Blurb:

Pride and passion vie for supremacy in this steamy retelling of E.M. Hull's romance classic.
A haughty young heiress for whom the world is a playground…
A savage son of the Sahara who knows no law but his own…
When pride and passion vie for supremacy...
Blistering desert days are nothing compared to sizzling Sahara nights…

"There will be inquiries." I choked out. "I am not such a nonentity that nothing will be done when I am missed. You will pay for what you have done."

"Pay?" His amused look sent a cold feeling of dread through me. "I have already paid… in gold that matches your hair, my gazelle. Besides," he continued, "the French Government has no jurisdiction over me. There is no authority here above my own."

My trepidation was growing every passing minute. "Why have you done this? Why have you brought me here?"

"Why?" He repeated with a slow and heated appraisal that made me acutely, almost painfully, conscious of my sex. "Bon Dieu! Are you not woman enough to know?"

Excerpt:
"Look at me."

I shivered, my downcast gaze wavering only briefly before defying him again.

"Look at me." An inflection had crept into his low tone that was unmistakably commanding.

I lifted my gaze with great reluctance and met his in the mirror. Though I wanted to, I could not look away from his handsome sun-bronzed face with those inscrutable eyes. They were not black as I had thought, but the deepest indigo blue. Dark and intense, they burned into me. I was fascinated. Mesmerized.

He swung me around to him, taking my chin in hand and tilting it upward. "Bon Dieu! Do you know how beautiful you are?" His gaze dropped to my clothing, and his eyes became fierce again, his stern mouth parting in a cruel show of teeth. "Perhaps you are unaware that Zilah shall be severely punished for your foolish rebellion?"

"No!" I cried, straining back as far as his grip allowed. "It wasn't her fault. I sent her away."

"You sent her away before my wishes were carried out?"

"Will you kill her too? Like you did the horse?" I accused. "If you kill everything that does not obey you, you might as well shoot me now!"

"I will deal with the girl as it suits me." His glower had broken, replaced by a mixture of mild anger and patent amusement. "As to you, ma belle, it appears I must be your valet, as well as your lover."

"Lover?" I gave a contemptuous laugh. "Is that how you perceive yourself?"

He lifted a brow above his fathomless eyes. "You question my prowess?"

I remained stoically defiant, letting my silence speak.

His black brows met in a thunderous scowl. "There are many things you must learn, ma chère. Of utmost import to your well-being is that, save only for Allah, there is no will in this camp above my own." He continued impassively, "I could have you now, you know. In this very moment, I could tear your clothes, throw you down on that bed, and take you any way and as many times as I wish." He paused, smiling at the flare of fear in my eyes. "Fortunately for you, that is not my wish…at present."

He stroked the pad of his thumb over my lips. His expression grew almost whimsical. "Shall I make you care, cherie? Shall I make it your deepest desire, your only desire, to please me? I can make any woman love me when I choose."

He was amusing himself at my expense. He did not care if I hated or loved him, but was only enjoying a new form of torture, one that was even more detestable than anything that had gone before it. The mere suggestion that I could ever care for him, that I would ever look on him as anything but a brutal savage, infuriated me. I felt degraded and soiled that he would class me with the other women he spoke of. "I would rather you killed me," I replied coldly.

"So would I." He chuckled drily. "If you loved me, you would bore me to death.

Author Wednesdays--Kate Hofman

© Astine | Dreamstime Stock Photos & Stock Free Images

My guest today is the awesome Kate Hofman!!! Welcome to For Whom The Books Toll, Kate and I'd also like to thank you for taking time from writing to answer some questions. Kate is also giving one lucky commenter their choice of an e-book from her back list.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I was born in The Netherlands, and we moved to London, England (Chelsea) when I was 18. Some years later, I moved to Canada. I had an interesting career as P.A. to a very bright financier, and then one day I met a truly fabulous man, Arnold Hofman. We got married and were blissfully happy until his untimely death, 17 years ago. One son, Bruce. To have something to do, I did internet publicity for some writers, and Nina Bruhns said after a while that I should write. I thought she was just being nice, but apparently she meant it and kept after me. One day I sat down before a blank page on Word, and to my surprise I began to write! That is 56 books ago now, plus some short stories… Time flies when you’re doing what you love.

Share 5 fun facts about yourself.
I’m not a fun person, trust me!
(Oh, Kate that's not true)

What was your ideal career when you were a child? (and teenager)
To become a pianist. I was fairly gifted, but you have to be exceptional to make it in that rarefied atmosphere. It is good if a person realizes that she won’t be able to be THAT good!

Tell us about a typical writing day for you.
I get up when I wake up. Sometimes that is quite late, because at times I have bouts of insomnia, and then I sleep in a bit. I make coffee and go to my PC. Answer emails, read again what I wrote yesterday, and with luck (unless my Muse is vacationing on Mars) I start to write. I am living here alone, so I don’t have to watch the clock surreptitiously to make lunch, I eat when I am hungry. Last thing at night, I print what I wrote that day.

On average, how long does it take you to write a book?
My first book I wrote in 3 weeks, 123 close-typed pages. I guess I had a lot of stories to tell. I also wrote longer books in the beginning, 150thou words was average, and one when I fell in love with the hero, I made myself stop at 250thou words! I’ve since reduced that to about 178thou words, but I am still undecided what to do with this tome. Now, a book takes about 2 months if I have few interruptions. And mostly they are 50-60thou words.

How long does it take to write sex scenes?
Are you kidding? They just happen! If you have to plot them and work out positions, give yourself some time to think about what you’re going to write. My opinion, if it doesn’t flow spontaneously, maybe there"s something wrong with the scene.

Where do you find writing inspiration?
Anywhere. When I’ve just finished a book, I always think I’ll take my time and start another one next month, but then ideas crowd in—sometimes they crowd in before I’m quite done with the present book!—and I have to force the new one back until the present one is finished.

Do you have a favorite writing snack?
No, I don’t eat while I write, I keep hydrated though, with orange juice (or sometimes orange juice with a slosh of Cointreau – try it! you’ll thank me!) or water. I drink coffee only first thing in the morning. Late afternoon I prefer to drink tea, and late late afternoon, a glass of wine. By that time I feel I’ve deserved it.

Do you have any writing rituals?
No. I just finish with my emails, read what I wrote yesterday and start.

Where’s your favourite place to write?
I only have one place, my PC desk is set up with that lower tray that holds a keyboard, and my screen is opposite my face. Next to it is my printer.

What’s the best way to get over writer’s block?
Thea Devine, the doyenne of erotic novels, taught me how to get past writer’s block: Play WHAT IF… Your story is stuck when he leaves her apartment, say. What if in the elevator he meets a very giving kind of girl? What if they stop the elevator between floors and have a huge clinch? What if she runs after him and says, Come back, you coward? What if… see what I mean? And something will strike a chord, Boom! And you will be over the writer’s block.

What scene for you was the hardest to write and how did you overcome that obstacle?
I have never found a scene too hard to write. I just write and if I don’t like it, I write the same scene differently. I have found certain letters of condolence hard to write. But that’s real life, not romance.

What’s your biggest writing achievement? Why?
I think subconsciously we always feel that the book we have just written or are about to finish is our best book. It isnt always true, and it takes time to pick out this or that book as head and shoulders above what one usually writes. My problem with that would be that I wouldn’t want the other books to be out, if they didn’t measure up. You see what a problem that is?

How do you celebrate a new book?
Nothing much, usually the next book is already clamouring for attention. But I usually feel a book is really finished when I print a whole row of asterisks below the last phrase.
****************************** like that.

Can you tell us about your current book, Bored in Barcelona.
What made you write ‘this’ story?
I was idly toying with the idea of a young woman going on holiday and being bored with the city she finds herself in. Bored in Barcelona leapt into my tiny mind. Yes, but how to get that title into the book? Ah, wait now, if she was sufficiently fed up with her thin time in Barcelona, and wrote to the back page of her favorite magazine? And signed the letter, Bored in Barcelona. Yes, fine, but what would this bring about? Oh, justaminnit, how about the magazine owner has a friend, a stunning Spanish …um, writer. Yes, a writer. Of serious fiction. And he meets her and thinks Wow, an answer to my dreams, and then he finds that she denigrated Barcelona, which he loves….By time I had written that much, I also had to find a way of them coming together, and…. Please read Bored in Barcelona, and tell me what you think of it.

What do you think makes a good story?
Sometimes the most boring-sounding details will turn out to make a very good story. It is what you make of the bare bones. If you waited around for a good story, you would write very few books. One time all I had was an idea that the widowed mother of my heroine went to London England, and became enamoured of a 29-year old Greek tycoon. And I thought what if the girl flew to London to spend some time with her mother, and the 29-year old tycoon’s brother had had the same idea and was waiting to speak to the mother about his far too young brother? And the heroine thinks this man is the 29-year old tycoon, and lets him have it. That was all I had, and it became CIRCLE OF LOVE, an 86thousand word book that will be part of my first 3-novel bundle eBook, “LOVERS”. It’ll come out some time in August.

What’s the hardest thing about writing and how do you handle it?
I don’t find anything hard about writing. I just sit down and write.Sometimes my Muse is stubborn and will not show. Tough, then I decide to work on the book’s structure, and as I am working on that, I get an idea how to drag my Muse back by the hair.

If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?
You know, I think it would be Rafael de Córdoba, my hero from Bored in Barcelona. He has everything, looks, stunning virility, and he writes those high-brow books, so his mind is of an exceptional quality. Oh yes, I would like to meet Rafael in the flesh!

If you could have dinner with 5 people, who would you choose and why?
I would definitely invite P.D. James, because I love her mystery novels featuring Adam Dalgliesh, and I admire how she parses out little bits of information about him.
And I would resurrect Luciano Pavarotti, so he could sing “Nessun Dorma” for me.
Oh, and let me not forget Vladimir Ashkenazy, who plays Chopin the way I suspect Chopin himself played his music.
And I would love to have my handsome grandson Jamie, whom I love so much. He has the bluest eyes with incredible curling lashes, and a golden voice. I will let him sing his own choice for me.
And my granddaughter, Laura, who is a joy as a person and to behold. Ink-black shining hair, a perfect complexion, green almond-shaped eyes, a beautiful mouth, and a dry sense of humour. Yes, that would round off my five special people very nicely.
(Great choices, Kate.)

If you could travel in a time machine, would go back to the past or to the future?
Definitely the future.

What does your family and friends think about your writing erotic romances?
My grandson Jamie encourages me by word and deed, reading what I write and discussing it with me. Bruce, my son, asks from time to time whether I could perhaps write mysteries, then he wouldn’t feel so embarrassed when his friends ask what his mother writes, and he has to say, sensual romance.

How important is reader feedback, good or bad, to you?
Of course I am always glad to hear from readers, but in my opinion it would be a mistake to let it influence my writing. I write as I write as I write. I write what I know, and it comes naturally. Writing what someone else thinks I should write would NOT come naturally, and I would be surprised if such books sold, because the spirit would be missing.
(An enlightening answer)

What is your greatest temptation?
Goofing off when there is opera or a piano concerto on the tv. Usually, I watch the news, but I don’t care for sitcoms, except the Golden Girls—I adore Blanche! Apart from that, I don’t watch tv, except as I said, if there is an opera or a piano concerto on, and an occasional violin concerto.

What is your greatest weakness?
Dark Lindt chocolate!
(Yummy!)

What’s the best advice you can give to an aspiring author?
Write, write, write. Don’t show your early writings to ANYone, most people are not competent to judge, and it will be quite some time before a professional can be persuaded to spend time reading the mss. of hopefuls.
I wrote for five years in seclusion, and when I had amassed 25 books in that time, a friend said I should send one in to DCL and I did, and they accepted it there and then. I was so lucky, because usually we writers don’t handle rejection well – well, who does! When you get something accepted, I hope you will be lucky and find an EDITOR, and not a Book-doctor, who will shape YOUR work to the requirements of the publisher. No way. Be protective of your own work, and don’t let others manhandle it. I would rather withdraw a book from publication than have someone else eagerly write their version of MY writing! Belleve me, if you’re any good, someone will notice you sooner or later, and let’s hope it will be sooner.
And do your research. How boring are writers who look up words in a dictionary, thinking that the foreign language is simple – not so! They are usually conjugated, and when you look up a word and write it in your text, chances are that you are using an infinitive of the verb for a conjugated form. This makes the writer look ridiculous and a bit stupid.
If you want to write about a foreign location, you can make do with research, but don’t google a little map and take a few place names at random, that is a big no-no. You have to invest some time to get the feel of the place! Then look at photos, sometimes you will find that the earth is reddish, you should mention that. See what I mean? Either write what you know, or be sure to do your in-depth research.
(Excellent advise.)

How do you relax?
Amazingly, I relax when I’m writing.

What is your favorite all time book?
PALIMPSEST by Gore Vidal.

 Night owl.

 Restaurant dinners

I also owe my grateful thanks to Thea Devine, who taught me to play “What If” when the writing isn’t going well.

And more recently, I have been given generous help, encouragement and advice by Jennifer Mueller, a wonderful writer, who also provided the stunning cover art for all my books published by Romance At Heart. I owe you all so much.

Dare she place her heart in his care?

Dr. Charlotte James will do anything to save her best friend's unborn baby--even turn to her ex-fiancé, Dr. Quinn Devlyn! Their relationship ended badly after the loss of their own little miracle, and while Charlotte trusts the hotshot neonatal surgeon's amazing ability, she doesn't trust the man who buries his emotions in work....

A career-threatening injury has left Quinn at a crossroads in his life. But, working with Charlotte again in the snowbound beauty of her isolated community practice, he realizes he's been given a second chance to prove that both the baby and Charlotte's fragile heart will be safe in his hands....

Excerpt:
The pit of Charlotte's stomach dropped to her knees. No. Scratch that. Make it the soles of her feet. Not since her MCATs had she felt this way, as though she was perpetually on the verge of hurling.

She was seriously beginning to doubt her sanity in bringing her ex-fiance up to Cape Recluse. It wasn't a place where she could avoid him easily. He'd be constantly underfoot and she was dreading every moment of it. Would she be able to resist him? The only time she had resisted him had been when he'd left. When their relationship had ended, she'd never wanted to see him again, but his presence here now was a price she was willing to pay to help out her friend. Get a grip on yourself.

A blast of cold air shook her from her reverie. Her gaze focused on the tinted windows, watching the passengers head across the tarmac to the warmth of the bright yellow airport building. Immediately she picked Quinn's form out of the group of passengers.

Tall and broad, even though he was huddled down under his collar against the cold. Just the sight of him made her heart beat a little bit faster, her cheeks heat and the butterflies in her stomach go crazy. Her pulse thundered between her ears like a marching band. She hadn't seen him in five years--not since he'd walked out on her--but he was making her feel like a giddy teenager again.

Don't let him affect you like this, Charlotte chastised herself. She'd moved on with her life. The wound he'd left in her heart had finally healed.

The double doors opened and he stepped into the airport, moving to the side to let more people in from the frigid cold. He set down his luggage and unwound his scarf.

Damn, he still looks as good as ever. Charlotte had been kind of hoping Quinn's fast, career-driven lifestyle would've caught up with and aged him, but he looked as sexy and charming as ever.

Even from a few feet away she could see there was a bit of gray around his sandy-brown temples, but it suited him. Made him look more dashing and debonair.

Today's Author Wednesday guest is the wonderful Heidi Lynn Anderson. I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here today. Welcome to For Whom The Books Toll. Take it away Heidi.

Hi Everyone!
Thank you all for taking the time to spend with me. Today is a big day. It’s release day! WhooHoo! In Bed with Mr. Perfect published with Ellora’s Cave, is out for the whole world to see.
To celebrate I’m giving away a basket full of goodies. Stop by my website www.heidilynnanderson.com and leave me your email address and I’ll put your name in a hat. I’ll do the drawing on Friday 9/6/13 at 11:59 pm. The winner will get an email from me and I will post the happy news on Facebook and Twitter.

Okay, now that all that stuff is taken care of, let’s get down to the fun stuff.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a wife, mother, and small business owner whose dream is to write full time. I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire and love small town New England. I hate the heat and love the outdoors. That’s a weird combo when you live in Florida, let me tell you.
I like to challenge myself, so I’ve back packed through the White Mountains and skydived over farmland. I have worked in almost every job from digging in the mud to selling cosmetics. I was a preschool teacher and Hospice Nurse.
When I’m not writing or being swamped by real life. I like to be outside hiking, biking, swimming, snorkeling, and digging in the beach sand. I love to cook, and I think all the world’s problems can be solved with chocolate.

Share five fun facts about yourself.
I like dipping potato chips in chocolate.
I signed up for this intensive workout program just so I could look at the really hot trainer who runs it. The muscle spasms, leg cramps and screams of agony every time I lift my arms are so worth it.
I wear flannel Pjs in 90 degree weather and complain about how hot I am.
I’ve cooked my way through The Art of French Cooking twice.
I have a 102 pairs of high heels.
(I have 0 pairs of high heels.)

What was your ideal career when you were a child?
Wanted to be a preschool teacher.

Tell us about a typical writing day for you.
I get up at 5:00am and get my son off to school. I go to the gym and cry for an hour, them come home to shower and get dressed. At 8:00am I’m sitting at my computer, with reruns of 80s tv shows on mute in the back ground. I do writing stuff until about 12 then I get lunch. About an hour later, I’m back that the computer writing and I stop at about 4:00pm to pick my son up from the school bus. I’m a slow writer so I get about 3000 words down a day. If I have not made my quota for the day, I go back to writing until I’m done.

On average, how long does it take you to write a book?
My first full-length book JUST SEX took me three years to write and get it published. It took nine months to write it and two and a half years to fix it. LOL. My Novella IN BED WITH MR. PERFECT took about a month to write and a month to fix before I sent it to my editor.

How long does it take to write sex scenes?
That’s a good question. It can take all day or it can take weeks to get it right.

Where do you find writing inspiration?
In everything! I can be at the grocery store and an idea pops into my head.

Do you have a favorite writing snack?
I would like to tell you I snack on fruit and veggies when writing, put the sad facts are I don’t. The evil junk foods call my name all the way from the store and make me go buy them.

Do you have any writing rituals?
Every time I stop writing whether it’s to get a drink or run an errand, I have to check my emails, FB and Twitter before I can start again. It’s a long day when I’ve had a lot of water. Just saying.

Where is your favorite place to write?
I have an office that has a recliner in it. That’s where I do a lot of my writing.

What is the best way to get over winterers block?
Sit my ass in the chair and write. This is a career for me and I need to treat it as such. I can’t go to my pay the bills job and say oh, I don’t feel like it today. I’m just blocked.

What scene for yours was the hardest to write and how did you overcome that obstacle?
When I’m stuck, I call my critique partner and we talk it out. If that doesn’t work, I put it aside for a little bit and work on something else. Some times working on a new story helps clean out the cobwebs.

Whatís your biggest writing achievement? Why?
My first book. Never in a million years did I think I would write a book.

How do you celebrate a new book?
Start the next one.
(I love this answer)

Can you tell us about your current book?
The story is called The Rebound Guy. It’s about a woman who finds her boyfriend cheating on her with a transvestite. Her grandmother convinces her to go on her honeymoon alone to figure things out. Well, lets just say, she finds the man of her dreams while on vacation and decides to have a no strings attached thing with him and of course strings get attached.

What made you write this story?
The story popped in my head and wouldn’t leave.

What do you think makes a good story?
A good story needs to come from the heart.

What is the hardest thing about writing and how do you handle it?
Everything about writing is hard. Lol. If you want the next contract, you do what it takes to get it.

If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?
All of them! ;-)   I would have a huge party and tell them how much love I them. They are all so special to me.

If you could have dinner with 5 people, who would you choose and why?
Nora Roberts. I would love to just talk to her.
God because I have some questions.
My son Nick who passed away 10 years ago, I just want to hold him and tell him how much I love him.
The child I was, so I can tell her that she can do anything she puts her mind to and show her what we have done.
And Stephen King. I want to talk to him about writing.

If you could travel in a time machine, would go back to the past or to the future?
I would go back.

What does your family and friends think about your writing erotic romances?
My family’s very supportive. My mother pushes my books at church and my husband tells every one he meets about my books.

How important is reader feedback, good or bad, to you?
I want to make my readers happy so I love hearing what they have to say.

What is your greatest temptation?
Cake

What is your greatest weakness:
Carbs

What is the best advice you can give to an inspiring author?
Don’t quit! If you want it bad enough and work hard enough for it, it will come. It may take years of blood sweat and tears, but it will come.

How do you relax?
I don’t hehehe.

What is your favorite all time book?
I have so many it wouldn’t be fair to pick just one.

Fun Questions

Pepsi or Coke?
Diet Pepsi

Chips or pretzels?
Chips

Chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate

Mountains or beach?

Pink- I know, don’t judge me. ;-)

All kinds I do not discriminate.

 Dress up

Blurb:
Curvy Ann Griffin has a secret—she’s in love with her longtime best friend and business partner Joe Mathews. After suffering through a date from hell—which definitely wasn’t worth putting on her strangling shapewear for—Ann heads home. How was she supposed to know the night would end with her throwing herself into his arms and allowing him to fulfill her every fantasy?
What’s a guy to do when the woman he loves kisses him senseless? Go with it, that’s what. For more than a decade, Joe has fought back his needs for the voluptuous beauty. In his mind, the only thing missing in their relationship was the ability to explore every inch of her luscious body.
Although sleeping with Ann could destroy everything they have, Joe won’t allow that to happen. He knows they’re made for each other. Now he only needs to convince her.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

“What the hell was I thinking?” Ann Griffin said as she tugged at the Lycra shapewear cutting off her circulation. She smoothed the black wrap dress over her hips and collapsed into a kitchen chair. “Remind me never to accept a date from a guy who’s just broken up with his girlfriend ever again.”
Leaning down, Joe Mathews pressed a kiss onto Ann’s cheek. “You should have stayed home with me.”
The soft brush of his lips heated Ann’s blood to boiling. Air jammed into her lungs. Every inch of her body burned with fresh yearning and mixed with desires she’d spent the evening trying to suppress.
Ever since he sat next to her in Business 101 over a decade ago her hormones had been doing the tango. Up until now, she’d been able to stamp down her lust for her best friend. But lately her need for him blazed inside her like an inferno needing something to consume. If she wasn’t careful, it would consume her.
She forced out the breath stuck in her chest. “Why didn’t you go out tonight?”
“The Patriots were playing the Jets.” Joe moved to the butcher-block countertop and opened a pink pastry box. “I take it your date didn’t go so well?”
He sliced a huge piece of double chocolate cheesecake and set it in front of her.
“It was awful.” She pushed the yummy temptation across the table.
“That’s what you get when you go out with a guy based solely on his looks.”
“I didn’t go out with Scott for his looks.” The sad fact was she needed space from Joe so she didn’t jump him in the hallway between their bedrooms.
“Yeah, right,” he said.
She leaned on her elbows and sighed. “He seemed nice when we talked at the gym,” Ann said, referring to the business the two co-owned.
To her way of thinking, if she had to suffer though the misery of dating someone who wasn’t Joe she might as well have something nice to look at.
“I’m sure he was.”
“Okay,” she admitted. “It didn’t hurt he was shirtless when we were talking. Maybe I don’t have the best judgment when I’m at your place of business.” She laid her head on the table. “I should just wait until after closing to do the accounting paperwork.”
“Mr. Perfect’s is your business too.” Joe’s strong hands clasped her shoulders and started to massage. “Besides I need all the help I can get.”
“I’m just a silent partner.”
“There’s nothing silent about our partnership.” His finger worked the knot at the base of her skull. ”God, you’re tight.”
A moan slipped passed Ann’s lips. The needy pull in her core deepened with every cresses of his finger. Her pussy filled with moist heat. She should let her hormones have their way. Perhaps then she wouldn’t be soaking through her shapewear on a daily basis.
Ignoring the throbbing pleasure between her legs, she lifted her head. “The gym has the revenue to hire someone to help you out, you know.”
“Why? It’s fine the way it is.”
The butterflies dive-bombing her stomach every time she was around Joe told her everything wasn’t fine. “For you maybe.”
“What?”
Shit, did I say that out loud?
“Are you saying our arrangement isn’t working for you anymore?” Joe squeezed the back of her neck and tilted her head up. “I’ll find someone if you want.”
The concern filling his beautiful sea-green eyes tore at her soul. It wasn’t the gym’s fault she couldn’t keep her hormones under control anymore. “I love helping you build your dream.”
“Then what is it?”
Hoping he couldn’t see what his nearness did to her, Ann forced herself to smile. “If I wasn’t bombarded with testosterone-enhanced bodybuilders all the time, Jerry from the office might look better.”
“The testosterone levels in the gym are all your fault.” He pressed his sexy lips to her forehead.
“Oh please.”
Straightening, Joe lifted his broad shoulders. “It’s true. When you rush into the gym, all flushed in your smart business suits and sensible heels, the testosterone levels spike.”
Lust clawing at her core, Ann swallowed the need to ask if his testosterone spiked when he saw her. She shifted in her seat, hoping to dull the burning need coursing through her.
Joe moved back to the counter, cut another piece of cheesecake and set it in front of her. “You could use this.”
“I can’t.” Ann pushed the plate away.
“Why? It’s your favorite.” Joe sat. “Did you have a big dinner?”
“No, Scott took me to that new raw food place.” Sighing, she rubbed at a wrinkle creasing the vintage lace tablecloth covering the old drop-leaf table.
“Pussy. A real man would’ve taken you out for a steak.”
Talking about her bad date steadied her overactive hormones. “I would have settled for a salad on a plate bigger than a teacup saucer.”
The dimple on his right cheek winked at her. “So, dinner was a bust.” He wiggled his sexy eyebrows. “What about conversation with Scott’s shirt on?”
“If you don’t mind hearing about how wonderful his ex was and how if I lost thirty pounds I would be as hot as she was, it was fine.”
Frowning, he grabbed a plate of cheesecake and jabbed his fork into it. “You’re fine just the way you are.”
“Scott didn’t seem to think so.” Ann rubbed a hand over her belly. “For two hours I had to listen to how much better-looking I would be if I stayed away from carbs and worked out more.”
The fork Joe held in his large hand clattered against the Fiestaware plate. “When he comes into the gym on Monday, I’m going to kick his ass.”
For the first time since she got home, Ann relaxed. “Don’t do that. We need his business.”
“Fuck his business.” Joe tapped her plate. “Eat up. Cheesecake has protein and calcium.”
“Make sure you tell my hips that in the morning.”
“It can’t be all bad.” Lifting his arms, Joe stood. “I eat a piece every day and look at me.”
Her gaze roamed over all six-foot-two inches of his finely honed frame. She poked her finger into the whipped cream topping of the cheesecake as her stomach clenched—it did every time she set eyes on him and his mega-muscles. “Aren’t you cold without a shirt?”
“Not with you around.” Handing Ann a fork, Joe folded himself into the chair across from her and dug into his cake.
