“Did you believe Becca?” I ask Connor as he reads the letter he had sent to Becca a couple of weeks ago; the one I read yesterday. “You think your Mom had a change of heart?”

“No, that’s why I told her to let me know.” He drops the letter on top of the coffee table. The New York penthouse is the center of Becca’s search and rescue and no one has left the place since yesterday. Connor takes a deep breath. “Stop trying to find me guilty, the last thing I want is to hurt her or see … Shit, Brightmore, I have known her since she was little. I met her before you and cared for her up until my brother isolated her from everyone else. I fucked up several times, but it has never been my intention to damage her in any way.”

“Brightmore, I have a set of new pictures from the airport,” Nick holds a stack of papers, “and Penn station. As we already know, she wasn’t alone. The man I told you about came up with these new images. They interviewed the cab driver in San Francisco again and he confessed there was an older man and a petite blond woman with her. Becca looked sick and they paid him well to keep his mouth shut.”

A picture taken at Penn Station shows Mrs. Patrick’s profile perfectly. The time stamp on the picture coincides to with the time when the cashier in front of her sold three one way tickets to Greensboro, North Carolina with cash. 

“That’s where my grandfather’s farm is,” Connor says as Nick mentions the tickets. “We haven’t visited the place, since he died. Two years after Ian died. I remember because Mom sent me to take care of his affairs and I couldn’t because I was dealing with Ryan’s mom at that time. No one has even set a foot there since then, Mom had grandpa’s body cremated and shipped to her because she didn’t want to deal with another funeral.”

Without waiting for Connor to give us more gory details or explanation about his fucked up family, I interrupt him. He gives us the name of the farm and address he has on his phone. Nick sends the information to the man that has been tracking Becca. He responds back saying they are already on a plane heading to Greensboro and that they’ll be at the premises in less than an hour. Raj contacts the best hospital that is in that city, a precaution in case Becca is hurt. Nick arranges for the plane that will take us hopefully to her, and then sends the information about the hospital to the people that are rescuing her. 

Ty and Connor stay behind; Nick, Raj and Drew come along and we lose the Federal Agent, who insists on following procedures and disregards all the information our private agencies have gathered so far. As we leave my office, he reminds us that if any civilian dies, he’d make sure to arrest us until proven innocent. 

We arrive at the airport almost at the same time as the captain. The airplane is ready for takeoff. 

“How are you?” Raj asks, as we board the plane.

A loaded question, I simply rest my forearms over my thighs to support my head with both hands. This is worse than having a guy pointing a gun and a knife at me. Those had been easy to avoid, this situation is out of my hands. The chances of finding Becca alive diminish every minute. A chill travels through my entire body as I realize she might no longer be among us. My head is about to explode, and I look up to where Nick sits.

“It’s been thirty minutes, Sir,” the edge on his voice contracts my heart. He’s been in situations like this one and surely knows more about the outcome than I do. There’s a part of me that wants to tell him to hit me with the truth, but I choose those sprinkles of hope Becca fondly talks about when she’s nervous or wants something that’s close to impossible to occur. “They’ll call to the airplane phone as soon as they reach her.”

As they reach her, if they reach her for that matter. The thoughts of them not finding her or the worst scenarios, play in my mind over and over again, followed by the unsettling sensation of defeat. The apprehension, fear and distress grabbed ahold of me the moment Ty mentioned he hadn’t seen Becca. To keep a sliver of sanity I push away the ‘what if’ with memories of us, Becca and I. Nick’s voice pulls me out from the trance the sour hunch and memories buried me in.

“Sir, she’s unconscious but stable,” Nick says pulling me out of the trance. “They’ll take her to the hospital Raj indicated. We should be there in forty five minutes. The paramedics are already working on her.”

My shoulders release part of the tension as I learn she’s alive, but before I can breathe again, I need to see her and know that she’s going to be fine.

“Mike you and I both know that that isn’t going to happen so why don’t you just tell me what fur ball they’re going to saddle me with.” I said as I collected my stack of papers and organized them into a semi-neat pile.

Mike noisily cleared his voice, “Uh hey Ari…”

“God I hope that whoever it is that he isn’t a complete moron. If I’m going to be stuck with a pack partner, the least they can do is send me someone competent.” Mike noisily cleared his throat again.

“What?” I asked, looking up from my desk. 

I was greeted by a tall man standing just inside the office, casually leaning against the doorframe. He had tousled brown hair and steely grey colored eyes. High cheekbones and a strong jaw formed his masculine face and a hint of stubble dusted his jaw line, not enough to appear unkempt but just enough to give a roguish impression. Dressed in black jeans, a black T, and a black leather jacket, he oozed tall, dark and handsome with deadly intent.

“That would be this fur ball right here.” He said, an arrogant grin lifting the corner of his mouth. I let my head fall to the surface of my desk, then for good measure I gently knocked my forehead on its smooth surface, one, two, three times. Dammit I couldn’t believe I had just called him a freaking fur ball! I could feel my cheeks warm in embarrassment and did my best to hide it.

“You all done with the show?” He asked as I lifted my head from the desk. I glared at him for good measure and then allowed my head to connect with the desk’s surface once more before sitting up. rubbing the slight sting away “Yea, I’m done.” I told him. Well, at least this wouldn’t be as bad as I had thought. James was the only shifter that I actually personally knew and was one of the few individuals I considered a friend. I met James about six months ago at a shifter bar downtown, though at the time I didn’t actually know that it was a shifter bar.

A group of coyotes had decided I was easy prey and were giving me a pretty hard time. James had intervened before things got out of hand which basically meant that he stopped me from wiping the floor with their coyote asses and burning the entire building to ash.  It was probably a good thing that he had stepped in but I remember being furious with him at the time, I had really wanted to give those bastards a piece of my mind and show them that I wasn’t just some naive little girl. That was back when I was still cocky over my abilities. Things had changed since then and the thought was sobering. Now being a pyrokinetic was something I had to hide and honestly, that just plain sucked.

“So, you’re my partner?”

James nodded, his face going serious, “Yea I’m you’re partner, ready to do something reckless?”

I smiled at that, James knew me all to well. 

“Absolutely.”

Grabbing my messenger bag I followed James out of the office, aware of Mike’s unapproving gaze on my every step.

The black cat crossed my path on purpose. I scowled down at it. Would it still count as bad luck if the beast was just messing with me? Amber eyes blinked up from the sidewalk. Did it count if kitty wore a cutesy red bandanna and matching harness?

“Are you coming, Karin?” Steph already stood outside the driver’s door. She’d managed to leave the vehicle without supernatural interference, and now she leaned back in through the window, her auburn hair glinting in the last rays of August sunshine. Her round face crinkled into a grimace. “I have to pee.”

“Go ahead. I’ll catch up.” I watched my roommate bound away and cringed. I had to go too. We’d been in the car for over an hour and I’d polished off my water bottle a few miles back. Outside my window, the cat yawned, exposing needle teeth and a scratchy pink tongue. “Hey there, kitty.”

I pulled the lever on the van’s door and pushed the panel as far as I could without bumping the stupid cat. It yawned again then blinked and stared. Ridiculous. A cat on a leash had trapped me in the car at the only rest stop for another twenty minutes easy. I’d never make it that far. Too much water and road behind me. I sighed and made a soft hissing noise through the opening.

The cat didn’t budge, but the sound got its owner’s attention. A skinny redhead wearing yoga pants held the other end of the cat’s leash. She stood as far away as possible, chatting with the man in the car on the far side of her Volvo. When I hissed, she turned my way and the flat crystal around her neck sparkled.

We’d probably been at the same event. Everything about the cat’s owner looked like she’d fit in at a psychic fair far better than I had. This was my punishment for going, sitting here until my bladder exploded while psychic kitty and his mommy held me hostage. The woman smiled at me, then dropped her eyes to the sidewalk and frowned, tugging the cat’s leash gently and making a similar noise to tempt His Majesty away from Steph’s mini-van.

The black coat shimmered when he finally stood up. He wasn’t finished torturing me, though. His spine curved and he reached out for a nice long stretch, staring at me with his huge eyes and laughing his internal, kitty laugh while I fidgeted against the seat. At last, when he’d tired of my torment, he turned and walked as slowly as possible away from my door.

I popped out of the vehicle like a cork and sidled between the van and the woman’s Volvo. A second black cat stared out from the front seat. This one wore a pink collar and a tiny, feminine bow around her neck. Unbelievable. We’d stopped at the rest area version of the Twilight Zone in the middle of Washington State. Somehow, the Seattle psychic fair had knocked us through a metaphysical vortex and the weirdness had tried to follow me home.

About the Author:

There is really not much to say... I love to write, read, and listen to music. My attempt at a music career sadly ended at the Apollo one warm night in May. LOL (Side note: I was not booed just outdone by two munchkins rapping to Biggy Smalls, they were good. 

Military brat extraordinaire; have traveled to a lot of interesting places.  This February I will be going over to the other side of the pond where I will spend two weeks in Europe.  I will be in Cambridge, London, Paris, Versailles, Bruges, and hopefully Cardiff.

The very first time I put pen to paper in story fashion (for fun), was in 6th grade.  The story was called, The Case of The Missing Pepperoni. It was a cute mystery where all the ingredients and shop appliances came to life when the store owner closed up for the evening.  See, pretty boring stuff. I always say I'm not the interesting one, but the people around me.

What are my writing quirks & must-haves to write 
Tigris Needs the following in order to function….

Well, I don’t have an entourage, but if I had one that would be cool as all get out! So here is what I need in order to function…. 

Paper/Pen (because I actually write my stories out) 

Grape-nuts

Music ( I have an assortment of play lists as well as the ones I put together for my stories) 

My favorite chair (Its old as heck but more comfy than an office chair) 

My rocks… ( I have a rock/crystal collection that I have in a pouch next to my laptop) 

Office Door Shut at all times, and no one is to enter unless they are dying or about to die, or I have mail

Military brat extraordinaire; have traveled to a lot of interesting places.  This February I will be going over to the other side of the pond where I will spend two weeks in Europe.  I will be in Cambridge, London, Paris, Versailles, Bruges, and hopefully Cardiff.

The very first time I put pen to paper in story fashion (for fun), was in 6th grade.  The story was called, The Case of The Missing Pepperoni. It was a cute mystery where all the ingredients and shop appliances came to life when the store owner closed up for the evening.  See, pretty boring stuff. I always say I'm not the interesting one, but the people around me.
