Interview with Katie Reus:

Ebook or print? And why?
I’m going to take the easy way out and say both, lol! I actually prefer print for my non-fiction books. I read a lot of books for research; in psychology or criminal justice text books and autobiography type books and find them much easier to read in print because they’re usually trade size or huge textbooks. And some non-fiction books I read I actually can’t find in ebook for whatever reason so print is the only option. For my romance books, however, I prefer ebooks because those often come in mass market size (which I hate trying to keep those pages open!) and it’s just easier to carry around 100+ romance books on my kindle instead of in my purse.

What are your favorite TV shows?
I’m going to sound like a total TV junkie but here goes… Castle, The Strain, Major Crimes, Rizzoli and Isles, the older Supernatural seasons (I haven’t seen the last two b/c I lost interest), Burn Notice before it went off the air and Game of Thrones all the way!

What is your favorite meal?
I really love eggplant parmesan. Seriously, I could eat it all the time!

What makes you happy?
A quiet Saturday morning with a full pot of coffee, an empty house and hours to work on my computer with no interruptions. On the flip side, I love it when my boys (my husband and son) are infiltrating the house with their natural loudness and my little one is saying ‘mommy, mommy’ every two seconds because he doesn’t want me to miss a single second of the important things he’s doing like kicking a soccer ball in the kitchen or doing backflips off the couch.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?
To fly because come on, that’s pretty freaking awesome.

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?
I wish I had a scrap of artistic talent. I can write a 100K book in 30 days but ask me to draw anything other than a stick person and it’s not happening. And even my stick people are pretty embarrassing. My husband is amazingly gifted when it comes to drawing and it makes me crazy because he rarely does it. It’s like he’s just sitting on all this talent. And the other day my 3 year old drew a cat better than I could ever could… and laughed at me when I tried to draw Mickey Mouse for him. Getting mocked by a 3 year old = awesome.

Favorite place to read?
A year ago we moved and got all new furniture and one of the purchases was for me alone. I got a leather chair-and-a-half because they’re freaking huge and cushy along with an ottoman and I absolutely love it. I love curling up in it with a mug of hot tea or a glass of wine and just reading in silence. It doesn’t happen often so I savor that time in my chair!

Favorite non-alcoholic drink.
I live in the country so Starbucks is a pretty rare thing (heh, I have to drive two towns over to get to one), but I love their chai tea lattes. Love, love, love them!

What is your work schedule like when you are writing?
Ha, when am I not writing? Writing is my full time job and I work between 40-60 hours a week, depending on things. This summer has been a little crazy but my ‘normal-ish’ schedule during the school year: I wake up early before my son gets up so I can sneak in an hour or two of catching up on emails and social media time. Then after dropping him off at pre-school, I chug a couple cups of coffee and try to knock out 3K words before noon. When working on a project, which lately is pretty much *always*, I tend to write 3K words a day, 5 days a week no matter what. It usually ends up being more, but that’s my goal and anything else is just cake. Then in the afternoons if I’ve met my word count goal I get caught up on other things like print book formatting, promo stuff, website updates… and a billion tiny things that just need to get done during the week. Other than actual writing, the stuff I do changes week to week. Luckily I get to be pretty flexible with my schedule. The only thing I’m not flexible with is my word count. No matter what, I try to write 15-20K a week.

If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t be so eager to sign with a publisher that I wouldn’t do my homework. Early on in my career I signed with a small publisher (and have since gotten all my rights back) for three books. I should have waited and honed my craft more and learned more about contract negotiations. Basically, I would have had more patience, done a lot more research and talked to other authors about their experience with that house. It’s hard to regret that decision though, because by signing with them I ended up meeting someone who is now my best friend and the best critique partner I could ask for.

Excerpt from Sensual Surrender by Katie Reus
“I won’t miss it,” he said, taking his planner and setting it down without looking at it. He stared at his laptop, his fingers clacking away on the keys as he spoke. “Besides, you’re coming with me to that one. I don’t know why you’re so stressed today.”

She bit her lip, trying to find the right words. Impossible ones she just needed to get out. Maybe the silence was more weighted than she realized because he looked up then, his blue eyes electric in their intensity.

“You are going with me to that meeting?”

“Wyatt, I’ve enjoyed working for you more than I can say.” She smoothed her hand down her skirt again, a stupid nervous habit.
His expression went flat. “You’re not quitting.”

She blinked at his forceful tone. “I appreciate everything you did for me when I graduated.” He’d given her a job right out of school. She’d just gotten her Master’s in Business Administration and had been hungry to work. Landing a position with one of the richest men in the country had been a dream come true. She worked her ass off, but he compensated all his employees well and she loved what she did. Leaving this position was one of the hardest decisions, but she knew she had to do it. Once she told Kevin that she’d been fired—a tiny lie—she wouldn’t be able to help him with whatever plan he had to rob the Serafina. This was the only way.

Frowning, Wyatt stood, pushing his chair back before rounding his desk. Wearing a custom-made pinstriped suit, the tall man with midnight black hair and electric blue eyes, that were so damn intense as to be scary, was giving her all his focus. She didn’t like feeling as if she were under a microscope, but stood her ground.

Crossing his arms over his chest, he leaned against the front of his desk and faced off with her. Even though he wasn’t as tall as Jay, the man was certainly intimidating. She’d seen him use this glare with business associates and even enemies before and had never thought to be on the receiving end of one of his ‘looks’. “Are you giving your resignation?” he asked quietly, disbelief threading through every word.

Even though she wanted to stay strong, she dropped her gaze and fished out the folded piece of paper she’d tucked in the back of her skirt. It was slightly wrinkled as she handed it to him. “I’m sorry that I can’t give you two weeks’ notice and if you won’t give me a reference I completely understand. I hope that you will as I’ve enjoyed working here, but—”

“I’m not accepting your resignation,” he said calmly, his bluntness taking her by surprise. She forced herself to meet his gaze again. “Is this about you and Jay? Are you guys having problems? Whatever this is about, we’ll work it out. Do you want a raise? Hell, you deserve one so consider it done, effective tomorrow.”

She shook her head, taken aback by the offer. “I…” For a brief moment she thought of telling him that her thieving ex-boyfriend wanted her to steal from him. If she didn’t work here anymore, the bastard couldn’t blackmail her into anything. Which meant she’d become useless to Kevin and he’d leave her alone. She knew how that rat Kevin operated. But if she stayed on as Wyatt’s assistant, she’d always be a target for Kevin. He would keep coming at her until someone in her life got hurt.

Xpresso Presents~ Emily Goodwin's Stay Book Blitz!

Welcome to my blog! Today I'm hosting Emily Goodwin's Stay Book Blitz presented by Xpresso Book Tours. Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my post.

Since I typically write paranormal/horror, my usual writing playlists are filled with epic songs from soundtracks with lots of NIN and Marilyn Manson thrown in. With STAY, I needed something different. While this novel is just as dark—if not darker—than the books I usually write, it’s a different kind of dark.

STAY is the first book I’ve written with a contemporary setting and no elements of fantasy. And yet it was one of the scariest books I’ve ever written. After all, the truth is often worse than fiction. Unlike ghosts, demons, and zombies, being kidnapped and forced into human trafficking is something that really could happen.

I needed music that set the mood for not only fear, but a sense of hopelessness and utter despair the characters felt. I am not a fan of slow, sad music, so this is as close at it comes for me. Here is the playlist I listened to on repeat while writing STAY.

Imagine Dragons- Demons
Of Monster and Men- Little Talks
Imagine Dragons- Bleeding Out
One Republic- Counting Stars
One Republic- Come Home
Animals- House of the Rising Sun
Tom Petty- Free Fallin’
Tom Petty- Mary Jane’s Last Dance
One Republic- Secrets
Coldplay- Fix You
Goo Goo Dolls- Iris
Tom Petty- I Won’t Back Down
Jason Mraz- I Won’t Give Up
Katy Perry- Unconditionally

“I felt like I was walking to the end of a plank precariously hanging over shark-infested water. When I jumped, sharp teeth would rip into me and the cold water would steal my breath away. There would be no release from death, only pain.”

Home after her first year of college, Adeline Miller is looking forward to a stress free summer filled with reading, working on her blog, and spending time with friends. But all that changes in an instant when she is witness to something terrible, something she wasn’t supposed to see.

Beaten, drugged, kidnapped.

Adeline Miller is ripped from her innocent and carefree life and thrust into darkness, into a world full of pain and horror. As a sex slave, she is forced to do horrible things, and have horrible things done to her. One of her captors has a past as dark as the world she is now living in. Excerpt:

“Don’t touch me,” I said through gritted teeth when Zane grabbed my arm, yanking me forward. I pulled my arm back, trying to break his hold. I wasn’t strong enough. All I ended up doing was causing the first layer of skin to twist and tear.

Zane laughed and jumped in front of me. His fingers tightened on my arm, the pain biting into me until I was sure blood pooled under the half moon marks left by his fingernails.

“I like it when you fight,” he groaned. With his free hand, he reached up and took a fist full of my hair and stepped closer, brushing his waist against mine. Jackson turned around, face blank. He didn’t care what happened to me.

Then Zane let me go. He laughed and turned his back to me, purposely flashing the silver gun tucked into his pants. My heart was in my throat. Nerves tingled throughout my body, and my teeth chattered.

“Come on,” Zane ordered and paced ahead.

I looked at the ground, blinking back tears. Jackson waited until I was a few feet in front of him to follow. The invisible wall of the cage closed in on me. I was sandwiched between Zane and Jackson. Their body heat suffocated me. Mixed with the humid air, it was nauseating.

We crossed the yard and stopped by a gate. Jackson dug a key from his pocket and unlocked it. He pushed it open and stepped aside. Zane took a hold of my arm again, forcing me to walk close to him. A gravel path cut into the forest, which started just several feet from the white fence.

The gate slammed shut behind us. A useless sense of hope fluttered through me. I wasn’t fenced in. I could run away.

And get shot.

There was nothing I could do. There was no escape. I felt like I was walking to the end of a plank, precariously hanging over shark-infested water. When I jumped, sharp teeth would rip into me and the cold water would steal my breath away. The monsters would take everything from me, leaving me shivering and naked in the water. The only difference was that tonight I would be pulled from the icy darkness and forced to do it again. There would be no release from death, only pain.

Thinking of a plan of escape, I closed my eyes and continued to move forward, my pace subconsciously slowing down. Lily had said that Jackson and Zane would go back to the house while I worked. I had to run then. What other choice did I have?

Zane jerked me forward. The toe of my shoe caught on the uneven path and I stumbled and tripped.

“Seriously?” Zane huffed under his breath.

My throat tightened with fear and I blinked back tears. Zane scuffed his shoe, sending a cloud of dusty dirt into my face. I coughed and turned my head. He stepped away, laughing.

Jackson stopped next to me and extended a hand. I traced my eyes up from his fingers. He had a bruise just below his elbow in the shape of a large handprint, as if someone had grabbed him and twisted his skin. Did he do Nate’s dirty work and that was why he was always injured? Maybe he collected unpaid money and got in a lot of fights. The black t-shirt he wore was faded and worn, and his dark eyes glazed over, hiding back his emotions. The emptiness on his face frightened me.

Ignoring his offer, I put my hands on the ground and pushed myself up. Jackson’s eyebrows pushed together and he studied a vine of poison ivy that twisted around a maple tree. He stepped away from me and bit his bottom lip. Zane grabbed my arm and pulled me forward again. I didn’t fight him. Really, the sooner I got into the trailer, the sooner I could put my plan into action. I took a deep breath and tried to steady myself.

Just like Lily said, it felt like we were miles away from the farmhouse by the time we reached what was called ‘the trailer.’ Really, it was a brand new RV, and it must have cost a lot of money. Yellow light spilled from slats in the mini blinds. An old blue Cadillac was parked behind it.

Zane kept a painful hold of my arm as Jackson knocked on the door. The blood drained from my face. It was as if I was waiting to see the face of my executioner, but he wouldn’t kill all of me. Only part of me would die and I would be forced to carry the black and festering hole with me for the rest of my life. It would be a constant reminder of what was painfully taken from me.

At the turn of the 19th century, former aristocrat turned lowly vampire Devlin Dalcon gets by on his supernatural charms until he meets bride-to-be Annabelle. Smitten by Anna’s forthrightness, intellect, and bravery, Devlin risks his life to spirit her away to Fontainebleau, France. There Devlin begins his ascent to power in a desperate bid for wealth and social standing for himself and Anna.

Forging alliances with other supernatural leaders, he usurps the vampire Lord of Fontainebleau, amassing many enemies during his brief reign. Within a few years, he and Anna are again forced to flee for their lives to America. Living in hiding, Devlin is determined to amend his ways. But when tragedy strikes, Devlin’s dark side, never fully extinguished, emerges rampant, securing him the bloody throne of America even as his malevolence and loneliness consumes him.

My Review:
This is Devlin's story, told from his POV. There were times while I was reading, that maybe Devlin felt remorseful for how he had acted in certain situations. I felt Devlin wanted to show his emotional side but didn't really know how, so he didn't. It was great to learn that he could actually have friends.

Devlin could also be a charmer and very loving when he wanted to. On the flip side, he could be merciless and unforgiving as well. I grew to like Devlin somewhat and understand how his past had molded him into the man he became. But he still scares the beegeesus out of me at times.

Ms. Fox tells Devlin's story with a lot of emotions and character surprises. The book is fast-paced, full of adventure, danger, unexpected twists and turns, and has a lot of sexual tension. I loved the secondary characters, they were well written and were full of depth and dimension.

I feel like I know Devlin a little better now and understand some of his motives and actions. After all I believe he only wants to make things better for the Vampires around him.

Immortal Confessions helped to fill in a lot of the hows, whats and whys of Devlin and a little bit for Danial. This is an important part of the story arc and should not be missed. I really enjoyed this book.

Excerpt:

Marc returned an hour later, tapping quietly on the door in the signal we’d established. Two swift knocks. Pause. One more. Pause. Then another two. I threw back the bolt and practically fell upon him, needing the comfort of another person. Needing his touch. He gave a short, pleased laugh and pulled me firmly into his arms, while sliding the bolt back into place.

“It’s okay. They didn’t see me.” He draped one arm around my waist, the other across my shoulders. I felt his fingers stroking my neck and I buried my face against his throat. The intimate embrace felt strangely comfortable and it was a long moment before I realized Marc seemed equally happy with this. He dropped a soft kiss on my hair. “Lila, we need to talk.”

I snapped back to attention and wriggled free. “He was here.” My voice came out as a whisper. “Rowena brought Jared here. She wanted to know if I knew him.”

Marc’s eyes widened. He grabbed my hand and led me to sit on the bed with him. “Tell me everything.” I recounted the tale, and he listened carefully, prompting me when I hesitated. He held my hand as I spoke, his thumb brushing gently across my fingers.

“The way she said cellar,” I couldn’t hold back a shudder. “It sounded like some kind of punishment. How soon can we leave and get him out of here?”

His hand stilled on mine. “That’s where we may have a problem. I can’t be sure the signal went through. The communicator failed.”

“So that means…”

“It means we wait for the scheduled pickup in two weeks’ time.” He hesitated, and my heart plummeted to my feet. “It means we’re on our own.”

Romance author Sofia Grey spends her days managing projects in the corporate world and her nights hanging out with wolf shifters and alpha males. She devours pretty much anything in the fiction line, but she prefers her romances to be hot, and her heroes to have hidden depths. When writing, she enjoys peeling back the layers to expose her characters’ flaws and always makes them work hard for their happy endings.

Music is interwoven so tightly into my writing that I can’t untangle the two. Either I’m listening to a playlist on my iPod, have music seeping from my laptop speakers, or there’s a song playing in my head – sometimes on auto-repeat.

Former aristocrat turned lowly vampire Devlin Dalcon gets by on his supernatural charm, swindling others for money and goods. When Devlin encounters bride-to-be Annabelle—another potential victim—he finds the tables have turned as he falls in love with her.

** I'd like to mention first, that Surrender To Me was written before the Promise Me series was created. The short story is taken from the full length story in Immortal Confessions.

My Review:
Being a vampire isn't all it's cracked up to be. Devlin Dalcon is tired, hungry and angry with himself. He uses humans to bilk them of their money. Devlin is supposed to be making plans for how to steal a dowry shipment, not looking for romance. But instead he falls in love with a woman about to be married.

Following Devlin into the woods, Annabelle doesn't notice she's about to be attacked by a bear. Devlin comes to her rescue just in time, but he's lost a lot of blood and needs to replenish it. He drinks from the bear, and Annabelle finds out that he's a vampire. Thinking she would be repulsed by him, now she is more intrigued and then one thing leads to another, and Devlin is making love to a virgin.

The two decide to run off together, despite the many obstacles in their path. They plan to use her dowry money to live on and are almost on their way when the gypsies arrive. A scuffle ensues and Annabelle is badly hurt. Will Devlin be able to save her?

Surrender To Me by Tara Fox Hall is written from Devlin's point of view which already makes it different. I was quickly drawn in on page one and wanted to keep turning the pages long after there were no more pages to be turned. I wanted to read more and more. Devlin and Annabelle's story is a true love story that is very well written. Devlin was turned into a vampire centuries ago, he still has trouble controlling his rage. The story is short and there is a lot packed into it, emotions, danger, surprises, and a few twists. Devlin is a handsome man, and he uses women to get what he wants, money and sex. His character seemed to change right before my eyes. I didn't get to know Annabelle very well, she seemed to know what she wanted and wasn't afraid to fight for it. I liked the world Ms. Hall created for her characters and I will continue reading The Promise Me series.
