Author Wednesdays-Cerise Deland Author Interview & Guest Post

© Astine | Dreamstime Stock Photos & Stock Free Images

Welcome to my blog! I hope everyone who is having record cold temperatures has found a way to keep warm! If you need some help with that, I'm sure checking out some of my guest Author for today, Cerise Deland's book covers can help you heat up. Enjoy our interview!

How difficult is it to emulate Jane Austen's voice?
With many Regencies in my backlist, I took on adding to Jane's Sense and Sensibility with glee…and not enough trepidation.  Lucky for me, my editor was an even better devotee of Jane than I.
She demanded more and more of me in terms of approaching Jane's voice—and forced  me to go back and read other works by Jane to "get in the mood" and her head. I learned a lot from the experience.

What are the elements you found most rewarding about adding to Austen's Sense and Sensibility?
I do believe that one of the reasons Jane's works persist in popularity is that we can see beyond her words, understand her people beyond what she gave them on the page. We can feel Elizabeth Barrett's anguish with Darcy's loss, for example. And so later, when she and Darcy resolve their conflicts, we can see them making love.

I wanted to do this for the two sisters in Sense and Sensibility. They pine, they mourn, they need a happy ending…but I could imagine that they needed a bit of encouragement to feel the way they did about their men. I gave them that…and enjoyed the heck out of it!

Do you think it is viable to add to a classic work? In what ways?
I know that many people violently object to any alterations of any classic works.

Yet, we watch TV adaptations and film adaptations of famous novels all the time. We judge the work based on its integrity, not as an adaptation to much as a whole work which delivers the right theme, premise and moral of the story.

I assert that an erotic adaptation of a work by the most popular of all romance authors is a viable addition to our entertainment.

Tell us about your qualifications to "write with Jane"!
As a trained historian and avid reader of non-fiction and fiction from the Regency period, I feel superb about adapting Austen's works into a sub-genre I know and understand.

I see Jane's works as romances. I see them as true representations of the period…and I do believe that in that period, women did experience erotic romantic attachments. We know however that few of that period would talk freely about them. But sex has been around since the dawn of time. We know. We're still here and we got here because women and men engaged in sexual congress. Often. And not all of them, I am quite certain, did it without some decadent enjoyment.

The Dashwood sisters love too passionately…and, it seems, without reciprocal feelings from the men they choose. But lust can change a man…and a woman.

If love is never sane, then lust certainly is all passion.

Elinor Dashwood cannot explain her affection for polite, reserved Edward Ferrars. In contrast, her younger sister Marianne endlessly extols the visage and virtues of dashing John Willoughby. Frustrated and lonely, Elinor yearns for Edward’s touch and some declaration of his regard. Yet she loves him.

Marianne eagerly surrenders to rapture in Willoughby’s arms—and cannot even consider the constancy of quiet, compassionate Colonel Brandon. Neither sister can escape the draw of lust. But as they learn more about those men they adore, they learn that love can be both sensible and sensational.

Excerpt:

The carriages were then ordered; Willoughby's was first, and Marianne never looked happier than when she got into it. He drove through the park very fast, and they were soon out of sight; the entire party, save Elinor, laughing at their departure.

Marianne exulted in Willoughby’s dashing act. Curling her arm through his as he drove, she settled against him.

“I daresay, my dear girl, I feel your body purring like a cat’s."

Gazing up at his striking face, she admired his roguish beauty and the fact that he was hers.

“When I am with you, I am a cat.”

He reigned the horses to a halt and caught her against him. “I like you wild and clawing at me. Shall I encourage you to do that?”

She tossed him a saucy glance, her shoulder up, her chin to one side. “Do as you will, Willoughby. I am yours.”

Capturing her hand, he pressed it to his chest. But she was not satisfied with so staid a sample of his charms, she trailed her hand downward to his flies where her fingers cupped his swollen flesh and kneaded his manly attributes.

“I say,” he gasped, his hand covering hers, “You are a minx. I lose my breath, my mind.”

She arched a brow. “But not your erection.”

“Never. Not with you in my reach.”

“I pray you, show me this proud declaration of your regard for me.”

“No. You are but a girl.

“Your girl, you rogue.” She massaged his cock and balls. “This package must be unwrapped.” She worked at his buttons and soon his red warrior stood straight up, the helmet bold and proud, droplets of delights oozing from his slit. “Oh, this is quite perfect, Willoughby. I have never seen anything so tall and thick. Oh. And he moves! He jerks for me. Shall I reward him?”

“Do, do,” Willoughby encouraged her, sighing and biting his lower lip. “He awaits your fine touch.”

She rubbed her thumb over the pearls dribbling from his seam. “He gives more and more. I am enchanted, Willoughby. What more can I do to show him my enthusiasm?”

“Kiss him.”

“Oh,” she enthused and bent to the act. “He is luscious. Hot and hard, the skin soft and yet so malleable. How do you do this, Willoughby?”

Laughing, he collapsed backward to the seat and let her have her way. “It is natural, my pet. I give all to you. That is my fondest pleasure.”

“Do you, dear sir?” Teasing him, she kissed his cock once more, licking her lips between her blessings to his member. “Show me your aunt’s house then.” She took all of his fine manhood down her throat, hearing him groan his approval of her act.

“Shall I?” he seemed to ask himself more than her.

“Of course. We need more…room for our pleasures, would you not say?” She let her eyes dance at him. The merry idea of a couch, a bed, a carpeted floor to lay him down and suck on his marvellous member filled her heart with rapture.

“I do, I do.” He pushed her up from him, fumbling to button his flies. “I need to have your mouth on me until completion.”

“Completion?” She sat back, allowing him his haste and preening that she had led him to it, even though her breasts ached and her lower body pulsed with need of him. “What is that?”

He caught her chin. “Heaven."

“Take me there,” she entreatied him. “Now.”

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY needed all those Dangly Bits, don’t you think?
Jane Austen I know well. She and I travel the same time periods together. True, only in my mind…but then a lot of us really dig Regency. When I saw that TotallyBound Publishing was re-doing the Classics, I jumped at the chance to do Jane…and SENSE AND SENSIBILITY with the erotic twists she might have forgotten to include.

Have you read S AND S? (You may have seen the movies.) S AND S is about two sisters who fall in love and in lust with men who are so well matched for them that heartbreak ensues.

The older sister Elinor gets feverish thinking of Edward, a young man whom she knows well…and perhaps not well enough to count on him claiming her hand as well as her heart. She pines, she yearns. He demurs. Finally, the two of them engage in a few close encounters which leave both of them wanting what they cannot have. Each other.

Meanwhile, the younger sister has the hots for a dude named WILLOUGHBY. Handsome and witty, he dances attendance upon her and then one day, he puts her in his carriage, leaves the country party in the dust and takes Marianne to his aunt’s home. A Big No-No to do in 1811.

Ignite Tour Giveaways-Author Interview with Naima Simone Secrets and Sins: Malachim

Today I'm interviewing Naima Simone and sharing an excerpt from her new book, Secrets and Sins: Malachim. There's also a giveaway so make sure you fill out the rafflecopter!

Hello and welcome, Naima, I want to thank you for taking time to stop by For Whom The Books Toll today.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Absolutely! I’m a Yankee transplant who married a Floridian. I have two kids who, between the accents and slang, I have no idea what they’re saying. I’m a PK (pastor’s kid), have a twin sister, had a dog I named Maximus after Russel Crowe’s character in Gladiator—but he ran away. Vin Diesel and I have a love thang going on. I worship the ground Nalini Singh walks on, loves me some romance—no matter the genre—and am a romance writer! Whew! You’d be surprised that I said all of that in one breath…

What is a typical writing day for you like?
Well, I get up in the morning. Get some coffee. Dress, pack up and head on to Books-a-Million. Have coffee. Do some promo and then get to writing for about five or six hours. Have a coffee refill. Arrive home in time for the kids to hop off their buses. Nag, nag, nag about homework, cleaning up rooms and clothes for the next day. Cook. Answer emails, maybe write some more depending if a deadline is looming. Nag, nag, nag the kids about getting in the shower and going to bed. If there’s a deadline, write some more, and if not do some reading and then hit the sack to start it all over again in the morning!

On average, how long does it take you to write a book?
It depends. If the idea is so freakin’ vibrant and clear, the book can write itself. I wrote my first paranormal Under His Wings—which was about 55k words—in six weeks. The characters, the story, the plot—it was like the book wrote itself. But on the other hand, Stroke of Midnight, a 23k novella took me almost 2 months because the story didn’t “click” with me until I was thirty pages in. Then I had to get rid of everything but chapter one. So it all depends on the story. Sometimes I connect with the characters, hear their voices as clear as bells right from the beginning. And sometimes it doesn’t happen until a quarter of the way through. My most recent book, Secrets and Sins: Malachim took me about three months. I’d say that’s an average. Did I just go off on a tangent? I think I did… Ya’ll should’ve reined me in! LOL!

Where do you find writing inspiration?
Oh man, anywhere! TV, movies, music, restaurants, the radio, conversations with my father, stories from my sister—she’s a teacher, church, people watching. Absolutely anywhere! I came up with the idea for the Secrets and Sins series from watching a Girlfriends marathon! LOL!

Do you have a must have snack while writing?
Co-ffee!! Why yes, I did sing that…
(LOL!!)

What is your biggest writing achievement? Why?
My biggest so far has been working with Tracy Montoya. Before I even submitted to Entangled I was a fan of Tracy Montoya’s Harlequin Intrigue books. She is an a-MAZING writer, and when I received an email from her in response to my submission, I almost fell off the couch! LOL! No lie. It was a serious fan girl moment discovering my editor was Tracy Montoya. That first email wasn’t an offer to buy the book—it was a revise and resubmit, but in a way, it was better than an offer. She loved my voice, wanted to work with me, help me to strengthen my suspense plot. An author I admired wanting to take me under her wing, work with me and help me to be an even stronger writer? Yeah, it was an awfully cool moment. And an achievement.

Can you tell us a little bit about your current book?
Definitely! The title is Secrets and Sins: Malachim, and it’s the second book in the Secrets and Sins series from Entangled Publishing’s Ignite line. Boston attorney Malachim Jerrod is facing the loss of his law firm and license, the fall-out of a twenty year-old secret coming to light. In walks Danielle Warren, seeking a position as a paralegal. The mysterious, beautiful woman has bare-bones experience, yet he hires her, and finds himself drawn to her. Danielle is wrapped in secrets and lies, but he’s falling for her. And when her dark past comes calling he must convince her to trust him with her truth. Because some secrets can kill… Insert creepy cackle here…

What are you working on next?
Currently I’m working on the third book in the Secrets and Sins series, Raphael. He’s the tattooed, pierced bad boy of the group. When a one-night-stand turns up pregnant four months, he has to face wounds from the past as well as protect this woman, who calls to his heart and body, from an unknown danger stalking her and their unborn child.

If you could ask 5 people to dinner, who would you ask?
Joan of Arc, Queen Boudica, Oprah Winfrey, Eowyn, and my sister. What a Girls Nite Out that would be, right?

Here are a few fun questions:

Pepsi or Coke?
Coke. I am the Destroyer of Cherry Cokes after all.

Chips or pretzels?
Chips! Sour Cream ‘n Onion! Pretzels are the ones left least in the variety snack bag because no one wants ‘em!

What is your favorite color?
Black. And not just ‘cause it’s slimming…

Shoes or barefoot?
Barney Rubble all the way. Barefoot.

Restaurants or stay at home?
Stay at home…with restaurant take-out.

Thanks again Naima for stopping by today.
You bet! Thank you so much for having me at For Whom the Books Toll today! I so enjoyed the interview!
I did too, it was so much fun and your answers were awesome.

Looking like sin and smelling like trouble…

When Danielle Warren shows up on Boston attorney Malachim Jerrod’s doorstep looking for a job, his first thought is trouble. Well, actually his first thought is how does a woman with the face of a saint have the voice of a sex phone operator? But sexy trouble or not, he’s desperate for a paralegal to help keep his struggling law office afloat. Can the boss keep his distance from the silk of his employee’s skin, the siren lure of her body…or ignore the haunting vulnerability in her eyes.

She’s the last thing he needs…

Danielle’s name is not her own, but the new identity finally allows her to take control of her life, make her own decisions, and she refuses to allow anything—even an unwanted hunger for her new employer—to distract her. Distraction is as dangerous as the desire she spies in Malachim’s gaze and the need that renders her defenseless to his touch. But the shadowy figure stalking her every move and growing more violent by the day makes letting her guard down impossible
.

But the only one he desires…

Danger is on the hunt, threatening the boss she’s falling in love with. Should she fight for the future of her dreams or flee to save Malachim’s life? Danielle must make a decision. Because her lies are unraveling. And some secrets can kill

Excerpt:
Silence reigned in the cab. Malachim wedged his body into the corner of the backseat, sprawling his legs as far as the cramped space would allow. In the close quarters, he studied her exotic profile. The high brow; thin, aristocratic nose just a shade too long by conventional beauty standards; the wide mouth with its full bottom lip; and the small, stubborn chin. His gaze dropped to the elegant, tightly clenched hands on her lap. Even in the shadows, he noted the paler skin stretched over her knuckles. Did she fear him? God, the thought caused the alcohol in his gut to roil and pitch.
“Danielle.” He’d deliberately softened his voice, yet she flinched as if he’d roared her name.
“Yes,” she said, keeping her head averted, continuing to stare out the side window.
“Look at me.” He paused. “Please.”
Her shoulders stiffened, and her fingers were clenched so hard, he feared they wouldn’t easily straighten. After several seconds, when her head turned in his direction, his lungs relaxed.
God, he longed to touch her.
Yes, he would be a eunuch and a flaming liar if he denied he wanted her beneath him, straining against his body as he thrust deep into soft, hot flesh he knew would squeeze his cock in the sweetest, tightest embrace. He craved it. Woke up in cold sweats from dreaming about it. But this… This need swelling within his chest now was gentler but no less hungry. No less desperate.
He yearned to rub his thumb over the hard line her mouth had become, coaxing the sensual fullness to appear once again. More than the next critical beat of his heart, he desired to brush his lips over her brow, ease the panic and pain in her eyes, and replace them with pleasure. With wonder. With joy.
What would Danielle look like carefree, laughing…unburdened?
Jesus, he wanted to know.
He straightened from his slouch, at the same time shifting closer to her. Carefully, unhurriedly, determined not to spook her. Not to threaten her.
In the darkness, her eyes widened, and her breath quickened. At any other time, he would’ve backed off. But not tonight. As much as he needed to have her sun-kissed skin under his fingers, she needed to understand—believe—he would take a blade to his own hand before harming her.
Gently, he cupped the nape of her neck. Pressed a thumb into the side of her throat and circled. She went rigid beneath his hand and loosed a tiny whimper.
“Shh,” he crooned. “No, look at me,” he tenderly ordered when her lashes fluttered. He had to see her eyes, had to be able to detect if his caress became too much for her to bear. Even more, he had to see the moment the fear bled from her beautiful dark gaze and trust entered.
“Thank you,” he murmured, staring into the brown depths. Yes, panic still lingered, but so did another emotion…an emotion that set his heart racing for his throat. “I would never hurt you,” he said. “Not that way. I may be an asshole sometimes and kick the hell out of your feelings, but I’ll never hurt you in the way that makes you shake under my hand.” He slid his hand into her hair, loosening the bun and cradling her head. And had to bite back his groan at the sensuous glide of her heavy hair over his hand and wrist. “You’re safe with me. I promise,” he said hoarsely.
