Excerpt:
“What’s wrong?”

She waited to answer me, keeping her gaze glued to the sky. “I can’t find Draco.”

I looked up again. There were no stars to be seen. The black of night was completely covered by the dull gray of low coastal clouds.

She took in a shaky breath and then shot me a look before her eyes darted away like skittish birds. “You told me that Draco is always in the sky—no matter what time of night, no matter where you are in the northern hemisphere. You can always find it. But I can’t see it tonight. What does that mean?”

I reached out and touched her smooth, cool cheek with the back of my knuckles. She was trembling so slightly that it was almost impossible to notice. “You can’t see Draco because you can’t see any stars tonight. It’s the marine layer.”

The breath shivered out between her lips and she closed her eyes. I continued to stroke her cheek. “I want to see it. I need to see it.”

“You just have to trust me. You can’t see it, but it’s there, I promise. Do you trust me?”

Her head sank as she lay back flat on the sand. I bent over her, looking upside down into her eyes. Our gazes locked. Suddenly it was hard to breathe. I stroked her cheek again. Her eyelids fluttered like butterfly wings. She was as delicate as one of them. As fragile. And I’d never thought of her in those terms before.

She was vulnerable. And in many ways she was at the mercy of everyone around her. Including me. My throat tightened.

She watched me for long moments, reaching up and hooking her hand around my neck as if afraid I would pull away. “You know what I love most about your eyes?” she asked.

I frowned, confused at the abrupt change of subject.

Her thumb moved across the back of my neck and I tried to ignore the tingling her light touch evoked. I wanted to pull her hand away but she was so breakable.

“They are so beautiful—your eyes. And so different.”

I sighed, tried to laugh it off. Emilia’s intensity was unusual but not surprising. It didn’t take a genius to understand why she’d be feeling somber tonight. “Men don’t like being called beautiful…”

She grimaced at me and I saw a glimpse of my Mia return. “Whatever. Deal with it. Your eyes are beautiful. In a totally manly way, of course.”

I smiled but didn’t reply.

She tightened the clamp of her hand around my neck, pulling me closer to her. Our eyes were inches from each other but I didn’t look away though intensity of her gaze made me feel like I was staring into a 1000-watt spotlight.

“They are so dark, so mysterious. I used to think of them as curtains, or shutters. To close off what was going on inside. But tonight I think of them as…mirrors. Reflecting everything. I can see myself in there.”

My breath stuttered a little. “Oh…” I answered in the smallest whisper that seemed to get swallowed up in the ambient sounds around us, the regular lap of the water on the shore, the distant hiss of the freeway even in the early morning. “Oh, you’re in there, Mia. You are most definitely in there.”

And then without thinking, just feeling, my mouth sank to hers. I was bent over her, our heads facing different ways, my top lip sealed over her bottom lip, and she opened to me and I tasted her. I was kissing her upside down. And this kiss held more than passion, more than a declaration of desire. It held love. My love. Her love. They collided like waves crashing against a barrier that prevented them from meeting. Like that rugged, unmovable jetty that protected the harbor from the worst of the weather on the south-facing coast.

“Spider-man kisses,” she murmured against my mouth. I kissed her chin, her cheeks and the tip of her nose. She referred to the famous kiss Spider-man shared with Mary Jane in the first Marvel movie. Completely unaware that Spider-man was her next-door neighbor, Peter Parker, Mary Jane had peeled back his mask from the bottom half of his face and passionately kissed him in the rain as he dangled upside down from his web. Spider-man kisses.

But was I as disguised to her as Peter Parker had been from Mary Jane? In many ways, I was. I wore a mask because this wasn’t the time for us to deal with all the bullshit that had gone on between us. My lies. Her lies. Our respective secrets. They’d created that barrier between our hearts and there was no telling if they were surmountable.

A thin, silvery tear leaked from the corner of her eye. I pretended not to notice, pulling back, stroking her cheek.

“I’m sorry…for everything,” she whispered.

“I know. I’m sorry for everything too.”

 Excerpt:
As I turned to leave the room, my eyes fell on a sketch pad and I couldn’t help myself. Sitting back down in the chair I flipped it open and smiled at the drawings inside. Marty had promise for such a young kid. Turning to a blank page, I glanced around and searched for a pencil. Charcoal would be best, but pencil would do. I started with the lines of his forehead, the curve of his impish nose, the roundness of his cheeks. I was lost in the sketch, enjoying the shadows, the tenderness in his expression, working to capture that moment of utter innocence. “That’s beautiful.” Her voice was soft. I looked up from what I was doing, not surprised that she had snuck up on me. When I’m lost in a project, the world disappears; the only thing I’m aware of are the layers of the project I’m working on. “He’s a good subject.” I turned back to the paper and finished up the shading of the blanket. “Only because he’s asleep and not moving.” Her quiet laugh sent shivers over my body. “That does help.” I smiled up at her. “But it’s the contrast. The contrast of him awake versus him asleep. He looks so young right now, so innocent.” “What do you mean?” She leaned closer to look at the picture. “He’s so mature, quick-witted.” I whispered the words. “But here he is, looking like the child he is.” “His teachers say that,” she said. “That he’s quick to pick things up.” “I’d say so.” I turned and handed her the sketch pad. “I hope you don’t mind that I drew him. The light and shadows were too perfect to resist.” Sort of like her right now. The way the moonlight glinted in her eyes and shone along her hair. Her perfect features would make any artist ache to draw them. Her pixie nose, the heavy eyelashes, the curve of her body hinted at by the oversized sweater she had wrapped around herself. It made my palms itch. Partly because I just wanted to touch her, to see if she would taste as sweet as she looked in that moment. “Thank you for keeping him entertained.” She stood up. “Can I keep this?” “Of course.” I stood up and stretched. Her eyes swept over my chest and then back up to my face. Maybe I wasn’t the only one tempted to touch. I hated to admit it, but I had a flare of pride. “I enjoyed hanging out with him.” I was surprised to realize I meant it. I never would have thought spending time with a six-year-old would have been enjoyable. “Looks like he did too.” She moved away from the door and I followed her into the hallway. “Did you get everything settled?” “I think so.” She frowned. “What’s wrong?” Her expression worried me. “Granddad would have hated a large ceremony.” She sighed and headed for the stairs. “But I guess that as a duke there are some things that have to happen.” “I don’t blame your grandfather.” I followed behind her. “I would want a small ceremony, not to be made into a production.” “I’m starting to think you don’t like any type of production.” She looked at me over shoulder. “Not really, no.” I wasn’t going to lie. “I don’t like being the focus, being the center of attention. It makes me uncomfortable.” I wasn’t going to lie, but I hadn’t intended to tell her so much about me. “And yet you agreed to help me with my grandfather’s funeral.” She turned to me at the bottom of the stairs and set the sketch pad on a table. “Why?” I stared at her for a minute, enjoying the way her eyes looked up at me, the tilt of her chin, the way her hair cascaded around her shoulders. “I don’t know.” Unable to help myself, I reached out and touched her cheek with my fingers. Her pupils dilated and she inhaled softly. With one thumb I traced the dip under her plump bottom lip. Her hand reached up to trace my jaw and she took a step closer to me. “You should be running from me as fast as you can.” She whispered the words. “I’m everything you don’t want.” “I’m not so sure.” “I live for the spotlight, it’s my food.” Her eyes were half lidded as she edged closer to my mouth. “And you’ve seen my family. I’m trouble, Max.” Did I care? I wasn’t sure I was capable of making a real decision as her smell wrapped around my senses. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to taste her, to touch her, to press her against my body. To hear her say my name again. Dipping my head, I grazed her lips with mine and I was lost. On a sigh, she leaned into me and wrapped her hands around my neck. Tilting her head back, I brought my mouth to hers carefully, softly, tasting. I wanted to deepen the kiss, to hear her moan, to feel the way her body could wrap around mine, but I kept it soft, sweet, and simple. She was in such a hard place, she needed to be protected, treasured by someone. And right now, I was that person.

Excerpt:
I can’t get her to look at me, I think she’s ashamed that she has no experience to go with.  When I’m finally begging, she looks up and I can’t help it.  She looks so lost, so sad.  I know that she just needs the courage, but how will she ever find it if she doesn’t know what the reward is like?  So I lean over, I place my hand on her cheek, and my lips on hers.  She doesn’t freak out, so I use my tongue to entice her.  I run it along her lower lip.  I feel her breathing pick up and I’m nervous she’ll push me away, but when she doesn’t I try to coax her lips apart so I can really kiss her.  When she opens them, her tongue meets mine and I have to keep repeating to myself, “Slow, slow, slow,” or my body might take over and try to push her past her limits.  She’s not ready for more than this.

I don’t let myself linger too long.  I would love to kiss her all night, but she needs baby steps.  I need to give her that or this won’t work.  “I’m sorry.  I couldn’t help myself, but I should’ve made sure it was okay first.”  I say it knowing that she needed the surprise of it or it would’ve never happened.

Her response takes me by surprise, “Don’t. Be. Sorry.”  She is breathing hard and can’t form a sentence.  I love it.  That means she loved it.  When she brings her hand up to touch her lips, I know I can make this better for her.  I stop her hand with mine and leaving the other on her cheek, I lean back in for a deeper kiss.  She responds immediately.  I make this one longer, but not much.  This time when I pull back, we are both panting for air.

“Wow.”  A simple statement from her confirming that she liked it.

Him

…I need time. Time to heal those wings and learn to use them…
Was part of the letter Rebecca Trent, Daniel Brightmore’s fiancée and best friend left when she ran away. The person he trusted the most for the past decade disappeared without giving him a second glance. She taught him how to love, believe in family and that everyone deserves a happily ever after. Now he’s struggling between wiping any traces of her from his life and drowning his sorrows away with the help of his new best friends—Don Julio and Jack Daniels.

Her

Rebecca’s past suffocated her to the point of not wanting to continue, her lifeline and the only reason to live began to withdraw from her. She wished it had been her imagination, but heard it loud and clear: “If not, there’s always a divorce, nothing is forever.” This time it became a leave or die situation. Something has got to change—she had to change. Packing light and leaving a letter behind, she takes a journey that can help her find herself through the shards of her painful childhood.
As letters, memories and stories are exchanged, two once inseparable people reconcile what’s left of their relationship. Beyond the confines of everything they built together, they’re left with two lonely people searching for what it means to be whole. Will they find meaning under their bruised psyches or will their pasts get the better of them?

Excerpt:

“Did you believe Becca?” I ask Connor as he reads the letter he had sent to Becca a couple of weeks ago; the one I read yesterday. “You think your Mom had a change of heart?”

“No, that’s why I told her to let me know.” He drops the letter on top of the coffee table. The New York penthouse is the center of Becca’s search and rescue and no one has left the place since yesterday. Connor takes a deep breath. “Stop trying to find me guilty, the last thing I want is to hurt her or see … Shit, Brightmore, I have known her since she was little. I met her before you and cared for her up until my brother isolated her from everyone else. I fucked up several times, but it has never been my intention to damage her in any way.”

“Brightmore, I have a set of new pictures from the airport,” Nick holds a stack of papers, “and Penn station. As we already know, she wasn’t alone. The man I told you about came up with these new images. They interviewed the cab driver in San Francisco again and he confessed there was an older man and a petite blond woman with her. Becca looked sick and they paid him well to keep his mouth shut.”

A picture taken at Penn Station shows Mrs. Patrick’s profile perfectly. The time stamp on the picture coincides to with the time when the cashier in front of her sold three one way tickets to Greensboro, North Carolina with cash.

“That’s where my grandfather’s farm is,” Connor says as Nick mentions the tickets. “We haven’t visited the place, since he died. Two years after Ian died. I remember because Mom sent me to take care of his affairs and I couldn’t because I was dealing with Ryan’s mom at that time. No one has even set a foot there since then, Mom had grandpa’s body cremated and shipped to her because she didn’t want to deal with another funeral.”

Without waiting for Connor to give us more gory details or explanation about his fucked up family, I interrupt him. He gives us the name of the farm and address he has on his phone. Nick sends the information to the man that has been tracking Becca. He responds back saying they are already on a plane heading to Greensboro and that they’ll be at the premises in less than an hour. Raj contacts the best hospital that is in that city, a precaution in case Becca is hurt. Nick arranges for the plane that will take us hopefully to her, and then sends the information about the hospital to the people that are rescuing her.

Ty and Connor stay behind; Nick, Raj and Drew come along and we lose the Federal Agent, who insists on following procedures and disregards all the information our private agencies have gathered so far. As we leave my office, he reminds us that if any civilian dies, he’d make sure to arrest us until proven innocent.

We arrive at the airport almost at the same time as the captain. The airplane is ready for takeoff.

“How are you?” Raj asks, as we board the plane.

A loaded question, I simply rest my forearms over my thighs to support my head with both hands. This is worse than having a guy pointing a gun and a knife at me. Those had been easy to avoid, this situation is out of my hands. The chances of finding Becca alive diminish every minute. A chill travels through my entire body as I realize she might no longer be among us. My head is about to explode, and I look up to where Nick sits.

“It’s been thirty minutes, Sir,” the edge on his voice contracts my heart. He’s been in situations like this one and surely knows more about the outcome than I do. There’s a part of me that wants to tell him to hit me with the truth, but I choose those sprinkles of hope Becca fondly talks about when she’s nervous or wants something that’s close to impossible to occur. “They’ll call to the airplane phone as soon as they reach her.”

As they reach her, if they reach her for that matter. The thoughts of them not finding her or the worst scenarios, play in my mind over and over again, followed by the unsettling sensation of defeat. The apprehension, fear and distress grabbed ahold of me the moment Ty mentioned he hadn’t seen Becca. To keep a sliver of sanity I push away the ‘what if’ with memories of us, Becca and I. Nick’s voice pulls me out from the trance the sour hunch and memories buried me in.

“Sir, she’s unconscious but stable,” Nick says pulling me out of the trance. “They’ll take her to the hospital Raj indicated. We should be there in forty five minutes. The paramedics are already working on her.”

My shoulders release part of the tension as I learn she’s alive, but before I can breathe again, I need to see her and know that she’s going to be fine.

**This can be read as a STANDALONE. The second book in the Lost series tells Jessica and Parker's story. **

All Jessica wants–as a college graduate—is to be a good girl. She’s taken the right steps for that, too. She landed the job of her dreams at a museum and is trying to eliminate temptations. No more short skirts (when she can help it). No wild parties. And no men.

She particularly excels at that last thing. . .

Until her path crosses Parker’s. Again. Jessica remembers the last time their paths crossed very well. She was left with a seriously bruised ego, and maybe even a heart-break. She knows it would be best to avoid him altogether. But the charming Brit makes it hard for her to elude his electrifying pull. He is as irresistible as he is captivating.

And enigmatic.

Because underneath the sleek Armani suit and the sweet British accent that makes her crave his touch, Parker isn’t the perfect gentleman everyone thinks he is.

He’s exactly what Jessica doesn’t want, but desperately needs.

A bad, bad boy.

I, Daphne Fox, have a few things to confess:

1. I hate Nick Brady. Loathe. Abhor. Can’t stand him 95% of the time.
2. That other 5%? I’m not talking about that at all.
3. People think I’m lucky for surviving the car crash. I disagree.
4. Nick is the only guy who makes my nightmares go away.
5. I won’t love him, though. Love is not worth the pain.

I, Nick Brady, have a few confessions of my own:

1. I don’t hate Daphne Fox. At all.
2. I find her scar sexy. Just like the rest of her.
3. I may be her older brother’s best friend, but that’s not going to stop me.
4. I love her.
5. And I’m going to do everything I can to have her.
