Excerpt:

Chapter Seventeen
It took two days. Two days of Ezekiel not speaking of her. Two days of setting up camp with strangers who glared at her and tried to pick fights. Two days of getting the last of the food from the slop cart because no one would tell her where the mobile kitchen would be located at the end of that evening’s ride. And a day since she fell off her horse because someone had cut the straps on the saddle without her noticing. It had been six-hours since she’d woken up, huddled not in a tent, but on the freezing cold ground where she’d been forced to sleep next to her horse so that she could make sure no one messed with her tack or Danger again. So she gave up her stubbornness. Gave up her pride. She was damned tired of being alone.

She went to look for the only person who might even be half a friend in the entire convoy. She went after Ezekiel Crane. Well, she and Danger went after Ezekiel. The convoy was currently parked on a giant bluff overlooking a crystal clear lake and meadowland. Many of mercenaries were taking the day to enjoy their first bath since leaving Sandrin. Sara was hiking along the bluff looking for a curator who didn’t want to be found with her horse in tow. She couldn’t trust the horse wranglers to look after Danger like the other mercenaries could. Mainly because everyone seemed to hate her from that one outburst the first morning she joined.

So she led Danger by the reins with her scimitar strapped to the left side of the saddle, her sword on her back and her knife at her waist. She had ridden Danger up the slope but it was more of a problem getting down. The slope was slippery, littered with rocks, and had a steep incline. Making it hard for a horse to get down without breaking its legs. She knew the wind mages and earth mages of the guard would work together to make a smooth incline when they were ready to leave. The way it was now was just a defensive tactic that would slow down any enemy’s forces.

They were a further three days out from the nearest deployment site and Sara had to wonder who or what Captain Barthis Simon feared that he would stick his entire mercenary regiment atop a hill with defensive rings all round them.

Sara shrugged irritably at the thought, It’s his problem, not mine. We’re sitting ducks up there. All it would take would be for one enemy soldier to get the brilliant idea of starving us out and we’d die on that hilltop.

That was part of the reason she was heading down. That and the solace of Ezekiel’s company.

“Crap!” yelled Sara as her foot nearly slid out from under her. She refocused on getting down the hill without breaking her neck.

What made life difficult for their enemies, made life even more difficult for a single rider just trying to get from atop the slope to grassland.

As they eased down, Danger whinnied anxiously.

If he could talk Sara had a feeling he’d be saying, “I’m a warhorse, not a mountain goat you idiot.”

They came close to a few tumbles, with the earth sliding out from underneath Danger’s hooves and the gelding almost pulling her down the slope with him. But they regained their footing and made it to the base. When they did he gave the loudest snort she’d ever heard.

“Good boy,” she cooed to him softly. “You were a good, agile boy.”

She reached a hand up towards his nose. Danger tossed his head away from her, refusing to let her pet him.

“Fine,” said Sara. “You’re welcome to be mad at me too. But make no mistake, you’re coming.

She’s a high class call girl. He’s taking over his father’s business.

Seven years ago, they fell in love in Paris.

They walked away at the end of the summer, never imagining they’d meet again.

Now he’s her client.

We fell in love the way you jump from a cliff. Hard and fast with a reckless sense of abandon. The six weeks we spent together changed my life, but at seventeen, I was naive. I was a dreamer. A believer.

Now I’m twenty-four and cynical. I don’t believe in love. There’s no place for such emotions as a high class escort. The only things I’m allowed to feel are physical – and that’s why it’s so damn hard when the client of a last minute job turns out to be the man I left in France seven years ago. When he buys me for six weeks at triple my rate, my agent makes it clear I have no choice but to take the job despite our previous relationship. And my heart makes it very clear I have to stay firmly on top of the cliff this time.

Because for six weeks, I once again belong to Aaron Stone.

Xpresso Presents-Ava Claire's Whisper Book Blitz & Giveaway!!

Welcome to my blog today. I'm hosting Ava Claire's Whisper Book Blitz & Giveaway presented by Xpresso Book Tours.

Ava Claire on Writing Whisper:

Most days, I wake up, check my texts and emails, then head over to jezebel.com and check their daily gossip round up. It's all tongue in cheek, chuckling at the crazy things celebrities do or say, and for a few minutes I get to live vicariously through the rich and famous. To be honest, I envied them. Who wouldn't want to star in some acclaimed movie, wear drop dead gorgeous designer gowns and shoes, and live the jet-set life?

Writing Whisper changed my mind.

Whisper tells the story of Mia Kent. Mia is a former child actor who starred in a popular tv show, Carolina, California. As soon as she hit eighteen and left the show, she decided to star in projects that were as far from her wholesome image as possible--unfortunately, her fans didn't make the transition with her. As her star dimmed, the thing that kept her relevant was her partying antics: staggering out of clubs, seen with a different guy every night of the week, seen with drug paraphernalia etc.

While I was writing the story, I wondered what it would be like to feel like the world expected things from you. That they put you in a box and that's what you were supposed to be; the same sweet, engaging, well-behaved girl the world fell in love with...or else you're just looking for attention. If growing up in the public eye is tough, being an adult when the world watched you grow up and think they know who you are must be unbearable. Mia is far from perfect, with skeletons in her closet and hurt that no one gets to see. All the see is another child actress that crashed and burned when they hit 18.

So now when I scan the gossip news, I crack a smile but I wonder what we don't get to see. The ugly side of fame that the cameras don't capture.

Mia Kent: Lucy Hale

Charlotte Kent: Renee Zellweger

Mia Kent lives a charmed, tortured life.

Until she meets him.

Liam Walker knows all too well what it’s like to fall from grace. A soulful rocker with a one-hit wonder under his belt, he believes in love–and he believes in Mia. He doesn’t know how to save what’s left of his career, but he knows that they belong together. He breathes for her.

Morgan D’Arcy is a classical pianist, an English lord and a vampire.  He has everything except what he desires most—Isabeau.  When she was a child, he appeared to her as the Angel Gabriel, influencing her life and career choice, preparing her to become Lady D’Arcy.  Many forces oppose Morgan’s daring plan—not the least of which is Vampyre law.  A vampire must not sire a child on a mortal.

Isabeau Gervase is a brilliant geneticist engaged to a prominent attorney. Though she no longer believes in angels, she sees a ticket to a Nobel Prize in the genetic puzzle presented by her long-absent childhood friend. She intends to unravel Gabriel’s secrets, using the DNA contained in a lock of his hair and identify the non-human species she named the Angel Genome.

Morgan is ready to come back into Isabeau’s life, but this time as a man—and a vampire—not an angel.  Will he outsmart his enemies, protect his beloved and escape death himself?  For the first time in eternity, the clock is ticking.

Excerpt:
For almost four hundred years, I’ve witnessed miracles of technology and the political wars that reshaped the world's destiny.  I’ve seen much to hate and a great deal worthy of forgiveness.  I was born May 29, 1632, the only son of the Earl of St. Averil and his Lady Ilsabeth de Gueraint D’Arcy.  He died at the Battle of Naseby fighting with Charles I.  My mother died alone in 1685.  By that time, an unnaturally long youth had forced me to fake my own death for the first time.  I watched from afar, unable to attend her funeral.
Yesterday, I was a celebrated pianist.  I learned my art on the harpsichord from an Austrian genius named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Later, I studied with Liszt, Ravel and Debussy.  From the Duke of Newcastle then the Frenchman de la Gueriniere, I learned classical horsemanship.
Tonight, I am a wanted man.  Mortal justice would hang me for a crime I did not commit.  My brethren wish to destroy me for a crime I committed with willful intent.
It all began in December, a brief six months ago.  Actually, my saga began in 1659 before the restoration of Charles II, but that’s another story...
This is our story—Isabeau’s and mine—our Folie à deux.

Excerpt:

At the theater, we bought popcorn, Milk Duds, and large sodas. After we settled in our seats in the crowded room, I opened the box of chocolate caramel confections and dumped them in the large tub.

“Um,” Quinn said, scratching his chin.

“Sweet and salty—it’s a must-have for movie watching.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously.” I picked up a Milk Dud, flanked it with two pieces of popcorn, and then brought it to his lips. “Here. I guarantee you’ll fall in love. You’ll never watch a movie without them again.”

“If you say so. . . .” He dragged the sweet and salty mixture into his mouth but kept my fingers enclosed between his lips. I held in a gasp while he ran his tongue over my thumb and then sucked on my forefinger before releasing my hand and chewing what remained.

“Agree,” he said around a mouthful of popcorn. “Wouldn’t want to be without them ever again.”

Quinn’s gaze latched on to mine. It felt like a bundle of feathers had been let loose in my stomach. “Guess you’ll have to come to every movie from now on. So I don’t forget.”

Speechless wasn’t even the word for what I felt in that moment. Dumbfounded might have been more like it, or maybe just struck stupid, because I couldn’t even move my lips to form any coherent words.

When the movie previews began, he turned toward the screen and reached for my fingers, interlacing our hands. Then he leaned close to my ear and said, “I expect you to feed me just like that the entire movie.”

Author Wednesdays~Jill Prand~

© Astine | Dreamstime Stock Photos & Stock Free Images

It's Author Wednesday on For Whom The Books Toll and my guest is Jill Prand. Thanks for being here today Jill. Jill has a surprise in store for us today:

We’re here today with Brad Hammer from Walk Into Me by Jill Prand.
Hi Brad we’re so excited to have you here (fans self) How is everything going with Lisa?
Well Lisa is getting better every day. I think she’s finally come to terms with the fact that Bobby’s not coming back and we really have a chance to be together now. I’ve never felt closer to her.

That smile on your face says it all. Is being with Lisa now worth all the pain you went through in the past?
To tell you the truth now that we’re together I don’t think I would change anything. I understood that Bobby was the one she thought was her soulmate but now that he’s gone we are finally getting our chance.

What in Lisa stole your heart?
What didn’t. (he laughs) Everyone always sees that I was there for her but she was my support too. My home life wasn’t always the best growing up and she was always there to talk to and help me. She always reminded me that I was worth something. That no matter how many times my father beat me I was perfect to her. How could you not love someone like that?

So you don’t think she’s selfish?
Not in any way. You have to know her like I do. She never intentionally hurt me. She never led me on telling me that she wanted more. Until this past December she never even let herself think about us being together. I knew what I was doing and I don’t blame her for anything.

What about the night the two of you lost your virginity?
She was hurting and if anything I took advantage of her. I knew she had been with Bobby and that he had hurt her again and if I had been a real friend to her that night I would have just taken her home. But I was the selfish one that night, I knew it would probably be the only time we’d be together so I took it.

Do you regret it?
Never. I lost my virginity to the one woman who will always hold my heart. How many of us can say that?

Where do you see the two of you in a year?
Hopefully she will let me move in with her and Cas. I want to spend the rest of my life making her happy and I think she finally wants that too.

Do you think she still loves Bobby?
She will always love Bobby but he’s not here and he’s not coming back so I have nothing to worry about.

I want to thank you for talking to us today Brad. I hope everything works out for you and Lisa. You deserve it.
Thank you for having me and believe me when I say that Lisa and I will be together for a very long time.

Here's a couple of interesting facts about Jill:

Lisa & Bobby  *18+ only
He raises his head and the pleading look in his eyes undoes me. I grab him, pulling his face up to mine as I open my legs for him. The second our lips meet the fire bursts between us. My body aches for the touch of his hands on me, the feel of his mouth, his length inside me. All thoughts of the talk we need to have vanish and it is just Bobby and me, doing what we do best. Our bodies know this dance, but it always feels new. I tug at his shirt unable to get it off fast enough. He pushes off me, kneeling between my legs as he grabs the back of his shirt the way men do, and throws it on the floor. My eyes drink him in; he is so perfect. His body is built like a swimmer’s, not too much muscle, but clearly defined. He has just a smidgen of hair on his chest and a happy trail that leads to nirvana. Scars mar his beauty reminding me of the perils of his work. The need to touch him overtakes me and I reach up to him. Taking my hand he pulls me up, “Your turn now baby. I need to see you, too.”

I pull my jersey over my head and it joins his shirt on the floor. I unclasp my bra, letting the straps fall off my shoulders, but holding it in front. Bobby moans, “Take it off baby. Now.”

Grinning wickedly at him, it makes me feel so powerful knowing how I affect him. I slowly remove my left arm from the strap. Switching hands on the cups I repeat the process on the right, never taking my eyes off him. “Lose the pants and I’ll drop it.”

He’s off the bed in a flash, pushing out of his shoes and undoing his pants, his eyes never leave mine as I move back to lean against the headboard.  He pushes his pants and underwear off in one smooth motion, kicking them to the side, as I drop the bra. I cup my breasts and pinch my nipples. “Show me what you’ve got for me, doll. Stroke it for me.” He growls, but complies with my wishes, it’s not often I take control of our lovemaking, but when I do I know just how to drive him to the edge. He strokes his impressive cock and I can see he’s having trouble holding back, there is already pre-cum pooling at the tip. I continue to pull on my breasts in time to the rhythm of his hand on his erection drawing a moan from my mouth. God, he is beautiful, and all mine. I can’t take any more of this torture, “I need your mouth on me.” It comes out as practically a whisper, but he hears me.

Excerpt: Lisa & Brad

“Wait,” I look up at him. “We need to get some things straight between us. I’m sorry that I screwed us up. I never should have asked you to be with me just because Bobby rejected me. I was angry and hurt but that did not give me the right to use you. It was not my intention to change our relationship and if I could go back to that night I would do it because I lost my best friend that night and I want him back.”

“You didn’t lose me Lisa. You could never lose me. Do I want more than friendship with you? Yes but I wanted that before we slept together. If all I can have of you is friendship I’ll take it. Do I fantasize about you waking up one morning and seeing that Bobby is not worthy of your love? Hell yes because I don’t want to have to pick up pieces of your heart again. And I owe you an apology too. After that night you needed me to be your friend and all I wanted was to be with you again. I couldn’t see that by not letting you heal first I was pushing you away. I wonder all the time if I had just stopped and not pushed you to give me what I wanted if somehow we could have eventually come together. So now I will be your friend because not having you in my life at all is worse than having to be just a friend.”

The tears are running down my cheek and he pulls me into his arms. He doesn’t say anything else just rubs the back of my neck. Why can’t I love this guy? How can my heart want anyone else? I put my arms around his waist and hold tight which is a good thing because just then we run aground. The boat stops suddenly and we are pitched forward. Brad puts the engine in reverse but all that happens is brown silt is churned up by the outboard motor. Brad cuts the engine so we don’t burn it out.

“Looks like we’re stuck here for a while,” he says as he puts his arms back around me. “High tide is in about an hour so we shouldn’t have to wait too long to get free.”

I can’t help but laugh. It starts out as a chuckle but starts to build. I feel his responding laugh starting as I pull away and look up at him, “Well this is a familiar dilemma. But I am not jumping in the water to get us unstuck. If we need to lighten up you are going in.”

“It’s my boat and I have to drive it,” he is still laughing.

“Yes but you weigh almost two of me so we will rise twice as far. And you’re stronger than me, you can push us off. And I have driven this boat before.” I point out.

“Like seven or eight years ago,” he says. “It’s a moot point anyway, I don’t mind waiting on the tide.”

I walk to the bow and sit on one of the benches there, “Fine we will wait for the tide.”

He comes and sits opposite of me, “Well then finish telling me about Bobby and Stuart.”

And just like that I have my friend back. I tell him everything, all my feelings and fears. The fact that my body still reacts to Bobby when he touches me or even looks at me. That I’m scared he’ll break me apart but more scared that if I don’t give it a chance I will regret it for the rest of my life. I tell him about my night with Stuart and that I can’t see myself with him this time next month.

Then he asks me a question that floors me, “Out of all the men in your life, who can you see still being there with you in five years?”

My only answer, “You.”
